What is salon photography?

Since the invention of photography 170 years, there have been countless uses and functions in modern society, and salon photography is one of them.

The combination of salon and photography was the product of photography activities carried out by the upper and middle classes of society at that time. In addition to investing in equipment, it also gathered colleagues to discuss various photography-related knowledge, which became the origin of modern photography associations or clubs. Therefore, various photography associations or clubs are also a kind of photography salon, which is a replica of art salon in the photography industry.

Salon photography now refers to this system which is relatively independent from the mainstream art circle in terms of theme, style, film competition, exhibition and operation mode.

The theme of salon photography is limited to the same experience of human vision: magnificent or exquisite scenery, beautiful women (especially human bodies), old people and naive children full of texture, rare exotic customs in various places and so on. With the historical origin of academic school and aestheticism, salon photography sometimes becomes a visual formula, and the significance of image or culture is rarely touched (even when shooting things of different cultures, salon photographers will pay more attention to the direction of curiosity), but this pursuit of aestheticism is easy to gain public recognition and love, so salon photography competitions and exhibitions are still the largest number of photography activities in the world.
