The difference between modern movies and traditional movies
The birth of DV opened the door to movies for many young people who were not appreciated by producers, and a variety of images also appeared. We continue to see novel film languages, and we can easily list a long list of names of DV directors and their widely circulated works, such as Lou Ye's "In Shanghai", Zhang Yuan's "Crazy English", Hu Jie "Far Mountain", "Matchmaker", etc. This is the pride of us DV filmmakers. With these, DV movies are no longer despised by the regular army, because the rules are being rewritten every day. Without the help of celebrities or a sophisticated behind-the-scenes team, what we have to do is to explore the potential of DV and make DV movies seem irreplaceable by film.
Each technology has certain advantages, so whether it is a traditional movie or a DV movie, it has its merits. Let’s first briefly talk about their differences.
1. Shooting Form
To a certain extent, DV technology liberates the director, allowing him to create spontaneously and shoot a large amount of material until the inspiration strikes and captures the until you are satisfied with the results. DV also allows directors to shoot in places with very poor geographical conditions that may not be possible with film cameras. However, the image effects captured by DV are relatively thin, and many people can "shoot movies" with a little training or practice. Gradually, there is a tendency that people pay less and less attention to the preparation work before shooting, and the "waste films" taken are getting longer and longer. On the contrary, due to the high cost of film, except for a few big-name directors, other directors must design scenes, write detailed shot scripts, and have to make sufficient preparations before shooting to avoid waste. Directors trained under this kind of pressure have the ability to narrate, direct performances, and create artistic atmospheres that directors accustomed to DV cannot match.
2. Color effects
The tones of movies are relatively rich, with connotation and tension; on the contrary, the tones of DV are brighter, the images are vivid, and they are more friendly. Since the technical limitations of DV make it unable to compete with professional cameras, DV can definitely put a lot of effort into color correction. DV is a product of digital technology, so the range of pixels is naturally wider than that of traditional film, and the color of the picture is smoother and textured. Unless traditional movie cameras have superb skills and master-level techniques, it will be difficult to achieve dreamlike situations. Works shot with high-end DV cameras can easily achieve unexpected color effects by incorporating CG technology into post-processing.
3. Storytelling
Although DV machines are good news for civilian movies and realistic styles, there is still a certain gap in sound and color compared with traditional cameras. Therefore, if the story is not attractive, Or it may not have a blockbuster connotation, but just express some of your own ideas or show your own life, or even be obsessed with the "flow of life". No one will be willing to appreciate it. Although DV works have a personal style and content, you should not be too obsessed with self-expression. DV stories must be carefully constructed and laid out, especially short films. It would be better if some social significance and practical value are added.
