Plot summary

Effie Brister, a 17-year-old aristocratic lady, lives in the countryside with her parents. This beautiful girl with blond hair and lively eyes is enjoying the most carefree time in her life: at the dance, there are always people rushing to ask her to dance, and her cousin offers his hospitality and admiration from time to time, creating Some vague ambiguity. However, one ordinary afternoon, her life completely changed. One moment, she was rowing in the lake with her female companion, talking about the private words of girls of this age. The next moment, her mother told her that Baron Insteadon had come to propose to her. Before, all the contact Effie had with this Baron Insteadon was just a dance at a ball. Although Instaton often looked at the most beautiful girl at the ball at that time, Effie did not take this man who was nearly 40 years old and about the same age as her father to her heart.

Instead of another identity, he was one of his mother's young suitors. It's just that when he was young, Yin Shitaiton had not yet achieved fame and was still working hard in the low-level military camp. After meeting her wealthy father, her mother changed her mind. "I don't want you to live in that noisy military camp." Her mother said. But this time, the parents took the decision and betrothed Effie to Instaton. Her mother told Effie the "benefits" that this marriage could bring her: When you are 20 years old, you can get things that others can't get when they are 40 years old. The ignorant Effie does not yet understand life and love. She is still very naive, loves everyone who expresses love for her, and responds enthusiastically to all kindnesses. What's more, compared to those young teenagers, Yin Shitai was determined, mature and successful in his career. Moreover, Yin Shitton showed great attentiveness to her. When parting, his mother said, "Effie likes people to write to her." So he sent letters to Effie's house every day.

After the wedding, Instaton took Effie back to the seaside town of Kessin. He is the county magistrate of Kessin. However, for Instaton, Kessing would only be a pause in his life. His goal was Berlin, entering the Parliament and becoming a ministerial figure. After returning to the county seat, he began to get busy. The busy official duties left him no time to take into account Effie's too many details. However, Kessin is a desolate county, full of slightly dilapidated houses, no dances, and no crowds. All Effie could feel was the vague hostility of the Insteadton housekeeper, Johanna, and the gossip between the so-called county ladies. Looking out the window of Effie's house, we can also see a strange grave on the beach in the distance, with a Chinese buried inside. The stories that Instaton told Effie, a Chinese, were always mysterious stories about love and disappearance. But everything just made Effie even more at a loss. This new-born girl fell into an unprecedented panic. She always heard sounds from the hall upstairs at night, the friction of skirts, the friction of dancing shoes. percussion, and some trance-like vocals.

She always dreamed of people in strange clothes, scenes of hugs and death. Effie becomes increasingly frail, but Instaton refuses to find another place to live. He believes that selling the house because of Effie's paranoia will damage his reputation as county magistrate. Fortunately, Effie later met a kind-hearted pharmacist. The pharmacist gave her sleeping pills. Effie began to need medication to sleep.

Soon after, Effie became pregnant and gave birth to a girl, whom she named Annie. After becoming a mother, Instaton began taking Effie to some social events. From this, she met Major Krambas and participated in the stage play directed by Krambas. Krambus is obviously a person who knows how to observe women's expressions. He and Effie ride horses, walk, and chat on the beach, and gradually let Effie reveal some of her girlish characteristics. Effie felt at home and relaxed for the first time in Kessin. With frequent contact, they eventually came together and had a tryst at a beach house. Johanna expressed caution about Effie's frequent outings, and Effie used the excuse of going to the pharmacy to get medicine. Instaton accidentally saw them together once. Although he did not blame Effie, he also warned him with words, saying that Krambasi was a "playboy" who was good at courting women.

Effie proposed elopement to Krambas with doubts, but Krambas suddenly retreated. Effie was sad and disappointed. At this time, Instaton received an order to go to Berlin to work. Effie locked her correspondence with Krambas in the bottom floor of the sewing box, and came to Berlin with Instaton. When he first arrived in Berlin, Effie's cousin came to visit, but Instaton obviously did not welcome this man who still admired Effie.

In the blink of an eye, six years have passed, and Annie has grown up into a lovely little girl. Effie has been moving between various sanatoriums and Berlin, and Instaton continues to work hard for his career. Several people went their own way. This time, Effie returned from the sanatorium and decided to take a trip back to her hometown. She and Instaton agreed to meet at her parents' house. It would have been a happy reunion, bringing three generations together. However, on the eve of departure, Anne broke her forehead while going up the stairs and the blood continued to flow. Johanna hints to the busy nanny that there are bandages on the bottom of Effie's sewing box. When the nanny pried open the sewing box and looked for bandages, she accidentally uncovered the letters that Effie had hidden for many years. Just at this moment, Yin Shitai suddenly pushed the door open and walked in.

Instead of learning about the affair between Krambath and Effie six years ago, Instaton was very angry. Although the situation had already changed, in order to maintain the so-called honor of the nobility, he postponed his visit to Effie's parents and diverted to Kessin, where he challenged Krambass for a duel and eventually killed Kramba in the duel. Sri Lanka. The pharmacist who was an assistant in the duel was very angry at Instaton's behavior and scolded Instaton angrily. Effie's parents were shocked after receiving the news. At the same time, they said they could no longer keep Effie in their home, even though she was their only daughter. This is also to safeguard the so-called honor of nobility.

After Effie and Instaton divorced, she lived with a loyal maid. She started working in the library, walking through the noisy market every day after work, returning to her simple residence, and started a life completely different from the life of a noble lady. The only thing she couldn't bear was that she couldn't see her daughter from now on. The maid wrote a letter to confide in the pharmacist. The pharmacist rushed to Berlin and asked Instaton to let Effie see his daughter. Effie finally saw her daughter, but she was disappointed to find that her daughter had completely lost her former liveliness under Yin Shiten's training.

A long time later, Effie's parents went to Berlin to try to get Effie back to them. But at this time, Effie was already frustrated. In the high-end restaurant, she took out a cigarette from her bag and started smoking. As her father and mother looked at each other, she walked out of the restaurant. She passed through the flow of carriages, horses, and people, while Instaton stood beside the carriage on the roadside, watching the still beautiful woman out of his sight.
