Behind the scenes

"Grave of the Fireflies" is a story about orphans who were victims of war. The film's depiction of hunger is very vivid and can be said to have similarities to incidents of cannibalism. This is a rare setback and lesson that a defeated Japan can only learn. The work brilliantly reproduces the various emotions of love and hate and distrust of people arising from hunger. It recreates the atmosphere of that era that can no longer be seen today. Rice, vegetables, watermelon...are all sublime as seen by hungry eyes. The movie adopts the form of cartoons, giving full expression to these props. This is a work with the theme of "death". It does not have political preaching, but carries out a frontal attack on "death" and takes it seriously. This brings a sense of freshness to the work. It and another animated film "My Neighbor Totoro" released at the same time each completed a very challenging creation on the abstract theme of "life" and "death".

Plot summary

Little siblings Seita and Setsuko finally found their mother during the overnight bomber bombing, but she was critically ill and died soon after. Their home was destroyed, and they lived in a cave by the river with only their bedding, living a poor but happy life. After eating all the food he could stomach, Seita went to the farm fields to steal food. He was discovered and beaten, and Setsuko became increasingly weak from malnutrition. Seita took advantage of the opportunity of the air raid and risked his life to steal vegetables from the farm fields to make soup for Setsuko to drink, but there was no improvement. As the war ended, Seita's father went to serve in the Navy. Seita used the money left by his father in the bank to buy some grain and fruits, but at this time Setsuko could not even open her mouth, and then died quietly. Seita joins the ranks of the street kids at the station.
