Lecture on Documentary Creation and Connotation Expression Press Release

On the afternoon of November 28, the lecture "Documentary Creation and Connotation Expression - Taking the Creation of the Documentary "True Colors" as an Example" hosted by the School of Journalism and Cultural Communication (hereinafter referred to as the School of Journalism) was held in Wenbo Building 208 classroom is launched. Dr. Zhang Changxu, deputy director of the Documentary Department of Hubei Radio and Television Station and senior reporter, served as the guest speaker. Shi Yongjun, a teacher from the Journalism Department of the School of Journalism, served as the host of this lecture, leading journalism students to understand all aspects of the creation of the documentary "True Colors".

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Shi Yongjun briefly introduced the experience and achievements of Dr. Zhang Changxu, and expressed a warm welcome to his arrival. Dr. Zhang Changxu used his personal experience in creating the documentary "True Colors" to introduce the two major sections of this lecture: the creation of documentary and the expression of the connotation of documentary.

Regarding the creation of documentaries, Dr. Zhang Changxu started with the development of Chinese documentaries and pointed out that in order to tell Chinese stories well and spread Chinese values ??in a global perspective, we must deeply grasp the relationship between storytelling and international expression. , we must take into account the harmony and unity of subjective expression and objective performance. Next, Dr. Zhang Changxu talked about how themes and stories contribute to the foundation of documentary films. How to identify whether a subject matter can be photographed should take into account the extent of the circle it is related to, whether it is a major subject matter in terms of significance, whether the experience is novel and unique, and whether the core values ????explored and refined are in line with the mainstream. To judge whether a story is strong, it depends on whether the story process is tortuous, whether the ending contains enough information to solve puzzles, and whether the characters make choices and decisions at key points in their lives, etc.

Dr. Zhang Changxu also talked about the difficulties encountered during the actual filming of "True Colors". During the official filming, 95-year-old Zhang Fuqing was hospitalized due to illness, and his superiors stipulated that he was not allowed to interview or film. Under this circumstance, Dr. Zhang Changxu led the shooting team to choose to squat, expand the peripheral shooting space, and obtain precious materials from Zhang Fuqing, the former political commissar of the army. He moved Zhang Fuqing's family with his sincerity, and finally got an exclusive 30-minute interview arranged by his family. Dr. Zhang Changxu used this experience to explain the purpose of documentary creation. First, to use true stories to restore the original appearance of the characters. Second, to appropriately recreate the characters based on the original appearance to achieve the sublimation and flow of the spirit.

Regarding the connotation expression of documentary, Dr. Zhang Changxu borrowed the concept of "qi" and pointed out that in order for documentary to achieve a state of vivid charm, majestic momentum, strong aura and smooth atmosphere, it must start from the composition and story captured by the camera. Comprehensive consideration is given to the design's starting and ending, guiding the audience's emotions, music melody, and the rhythm of the entire film.

Afterwards, Professor Shi Yongjun briefly commented on Dr. Zhang Changxu’s lecture. He once again reminded the students to be caring, warm-hearted and patient during the creation process of the documentary, and not to forget the power of sincerity.

During the interactive session, students actively asked Dr. Zhang Changxu questions: "How to gain the trust and attention of interviewees", "Experiences and skills in early preparation", etc. Dr. Zhang Changxu patiently answered each question one by one. At this point, this lecture has concluded successfully.
