Introduction of Rhododendron Garden in Nanshan Botanical Garden

The annual Arbor Day is coming, and chongqing nanshan Botanical Garden has announced that it will plan to build a Rhododendron Garden with a total area of 18.9 hectares. On March 12, chongqing morning post, an upstream journalist, got the design scheme of the Du Fu Garden project (hereinafter referred to as the scheme) through various contacts. According to the plan, the Rhododendron Garden is located in the southwest corner of the special ornamental botanical garden of Nanshan Botanical Garden, belonging to the special ornamental gardens such as Rhododendron Garden, Shade Garden, autumn scenery Garden and Wet Garden in the south of the botanical garden. It is bordered by Nanshan tourist highway in the north, wet garden in the east, shady garden in the southeast, ornamental plant scenic forest in the south and cliff in the west, with a total area of 18.9 hectares.

"one axis and two cores"

The overall design is "one axis and two cores" six zones.

The "one-axis" rolling hills running through the north and south of the site constitute the most important landscape axis of the Rhododendron Garden, which is not only a remarkable ridge line overlooking the Rhododendron Garden from outside the park, but also a landscape corridor overlooking the city and the color screen background of the whole Rhododendron Garden.

The "two cores" are located in the ornamental recreation core on the north side of the park and the exhibition science core on the south side.

The core of sightseeing and recreation: relying on rich terrain changes, we will create an ornamental area featuring rhododendron plant landscaping, artistic landscaping, leisure and multi-angle viewing, which is biased towards the color and large-scale display of rhododendron plants.

Core exhibition of popular science: relying on waterfront gullies and high-altitude mountains, we will create an interactive experience area featuring the introduction, preservation and classified display of rhododendron varieties, which is biased towards the popular science and boutique exhibition of rhododendron plants. From north to south, the "six zones" are: entrance landscape transition zone, mountain sightseeing and recreation zone, cultural leisure experience zone, waterfront ecological buffer zone, rhododendron popular science viewing zone and rhododendron introduction and domestication zone.

Entrance landscape transition zone: located in the northernmost part of the park, it is the first impression of entering the Rhododendron Garden from Golden Eagle Garden. Make full use of the existing rocks and cliffs, and create a landscape with azaleas beside the rocks under the forest, in order to preface the rhododendron garden with mountain characteristics in Chongqing.

Mountain sightseeing and recreation area: located at the highest point on the west side of the park, it is an excellent place overlooking the city. Create a multi-dimensional and multi-angle viewing corridor featuring aerial plank roads and viewing platforms.

Cultural Leisure Experience Zone: Located in the southwest of the park, it is the location of the municipal-level cultural relic building Wangfu. The design fully explores the memory and humanistic accumulation of the carding place, integrates cuckoo viewing, scene restoration experience and cultural and creative interaction, and creates a diversified interactive experience area with regional cultural accumulation.

Cultural leisure experience area

Waterfront ecological buffer zone: located around Moon Lake in the east of the park, it is a buffer zone for drinking water sources and a landscape zone for borrowing scenery and waterfront recreation in the Rhododendron Garden. Based on ecological protection, the design adopts a combination of rain ditch, wet pond and rain garden to absorb the rain in the park, and creates a natural habitat with wet plants to attract birds to inhabit, thus achieving a double buffering effect of ecology and landscape.

Rhododendron popular science viewing area: located in the center of the park, it is the most important landscape display area of Rhododendron Garden, including a large number of core attractions such as octagonal pavilion, art painting axis and Rhododendron field. It consists of two plots, the northern part highlights the artistic display of azaleas, and the southern part highlights the popular science and classified display.

Rhododendron introduction and domestication area: located at the southernmost tip of the park, it is the area where rhododendron and new varieties of rhododendron are introduced, domesticated and displayed, which can provide support for Chongqing's future greening construction.

Eight major plant landscapes can enjoy 78 species of rhododendrons at home and abroad.

According to Paul Hu, a staff member of chongqing nanshan Botanical Garden, in recent years, Nanshan Botanical Garden has introduced and tried to plant 37 species of Rhododendron and Ericaceae, mainly distributed in mountain tea gardens. They are Yangchun, Yuchan, Yudie, Yuzhan, Yujin, Yudie, Xiaoxiao, Zuibai, Pindie, Rouge Powder, Pink Purple Jade, Pink Xia, Pink Skirt, Meihong, Qinggai, Dahongpao, Tea, Bohong and Zhu Fan.

"The above plants grow well in the park and can be used as key rhododendron varieties for the construction of rhododendron gardens." Paul Hu said that after completion, the Rhododendron Garden will have 78 species, involving five cultivation groups: alpine Rhododendron, spring Rhododendron, eastern Rhododendron, western Rhododendron and four seasons Rhododendron, and eight plant landscape divisions will be planned.

Paul Hu said that the eight major plant landscape areas are Chongqing Native Rhododendron Exhibition Area, West Rhododendron Exhibition Area, Ornamental Rhododendron Exhibition Area, Subalpine Rhododendron and Rhododendron Diversity Exhibition Area, Cliff Stone Carving Rhododendron Exhibition Area, Art Modeling Rhododendron Exhibition Area, Autumn Leaves Forest Exhibition Area and Waterfront Hydrophyte Exhibition Area.

It is worth mentioning that the western cuckoo exhibition area and the artistic modeling cuckoo exhibition area. According to reports, the western azalea exhibition area is located on the west side of the ruins of the Wang Mansion exhibition area. This rhododendron is a cross between Belgian rhododendron and Dutch rhododendron, rhododendron and Mao Dujuan. It is the most beautiful azalea and one of the main potted flower varieties in the world.

"The artistic modeling cuckoo exhibition area will be built into a new photography place for network celebrities." Paul Hu said that this area is located on the north side of the central part of the site, which is the only place where the main pedestrian road and the battery road intersect and the passenger flow is distributed, and the site is relatively open. Therefore, the trail and the surrounding area of the site are regarded as the concentrated exhibition area of artistic modeling rhododendrons, and various varieties of rhododendrons are used as green sculptures, flower walls, styles and balls, and at the same time, rich interactive methods are provided.

Rhododendron, also known as azalea, is widely distributed in southwest China, including Chongqing. According to Jun Quanping, director of R&D Center of Nanshan Botanical Garden, rhododendrons are divided into 8 subgenera according to different morphological characteristics. There are 6 subgenus and 562 species in China, namely, Rhododendron subgenus, Rhododendron subgenus, Lonicera subgenus, Rhododendron subgenus, Rhododendron subgenus and Phyllanthus.

Quan Junping said that the hilly terrain and rainy and humid climate in Chongqing provide superior natural conditions for the growth of rhododendrons, and the well-preserved ecological environment makes Chongqing extremely rich in rhododendron resources. Nanchuan Jinfo Mountain, Youyang Tianshan Mountain and Wuxi Hongchiba are famous for their large population and large area of azaleas.

As the first of the three famous flowers in China, Rhododendron is one of the representative plants that have great influence on the world gardens. Quan Junping said that China has the largest variety of wild Rhododendron, and it is also an important birthplace and modern distribution center of Rhododendron in the world. However, the research on the development of Rhododendron resources in China started late, and it was not until the 1980s that some achievements were made in the development of Rhododendron original species, cross breeding, soilless culture, flowering regulation and so on.

Quan Junping introduced that the well-known cuckoo gardens in China are mainly distributed in Kunming, Nanjing, Shanghai, Changsha and Wuxi. Although it started early, there are still some problems, such as less application of Rhododendron species, single plant configuration model, lack of strong autumn and winter flavor, lack of local and cultural characteristics and so on.

Quan Junping said that the azalea garden in Nanshan Botanical Garden will learn from the experience and lessons of other azalea gardens. Through the establishment of the special garden, the azaleas are not only more artistic and ornamental, but also endowed with the value of popular science and scientific research, showing the azaleas culture of blending Chinese and western.
