Red-crowned crane is a national first-class protected animal.

Red storks are few in number, and have been listed in the Red Book of Endangered Birds in the World of the International Committee for the Protection of Birds and the list of national key protected wild animals in China, belonging to the first-class protected birds at the national level.

China has established 18 nature reserves to protect red-crowned cranes, among which Xianghai in Jilin, Dongting Lake in Hunan, Bird Island in Qinghai and Poyang Lake in Jiangxi have also been included in the international wetland list protected by Ramsar Treaty, and great progress has been made in the protection work.

Habits of red-crowned cranes

Ethnic groups and small groups that often pair up or get married. In the migration season and winter, several or dozens of family groups often form larger groups. Sometimes there are as many as 40 ~ 50 clusters, even more than 100.

Red-crowned cranes inhabit open plains, swamps, lakes, grasslands, beaches, reeds, swamps and river bank swamps, and sometimes appear in farmland and cultivated land, especially in migration season and winter.

Food is very miscellaneous, mainly including fish, shrimp, aquatic insects, molluscs, tadpoles, nereis, clams, snails and stems, leaves, tubers, bulbs and fruits of aquatic plants.
