How designers turn their works into a portfolio
Based on my experience in applying and recruiting, I would like to give you some suggestions that I hope will help you:
(1) The quality of all works must be high. Designers' works are basically pictures, and only clean and neat pictures can make people feel comfortable.
(2) The introduction of the work must be organized. You should use as few pictures as possible to show your design ideas and creative points. Every HR person who flips the resume will quickly catch her eye.
(3) The work must be focused and representative. Only put it up if you are confident that it is better, don't put it in a bunch.
(4) The layout of the work should be good. This is also an aspect that reflects your design capabilities.
(5) Form of work. Generally, it should be made into PDF. Download a file and you can easily view all your works. Remember not to send a folder full of pictures in a disordered order, and do not send a lot of attachments. HR will probably be confused when you see these. I dare not download your resume.
There is a saying in the design industry: ordinary designers make pictures, excellent designers solve needs, and top designers create ideas. It can be seen that the more excellent designers are, the more they need to be involved in design concepts, design methods, design thinking, etc.
If you are a senior designer and have your own methodology for design, you may wish to fully demonstrate it in your portfolio.
Choose a satisfactory work and share your design process, which can include user needs, brainstorming, user experience design, visual design, prototype design, animation and testing, etc. Focus on showing your thinking about the design process and solving user needs.
First of all, it is the choice of the time for portfolio production;
The best time to prepare the portfolio is after the project is completed. It is best to create a design portfolio with a design summary mentality. Right direction.
It is absolutely not possible to improvise when looking for a job. Lack of time to polish is the root cause of poor quality in many design portfolios. If job hunting is the result-oriented approach, designers will be more likely to present design results. What is completed in this way cannot be called a portfolio, but a collection of pictures.
Second, it is the visual presentation of the portfolio;
Many interaction designers do not pay much attention to the visual presentation of their portfolios. This is wrong. Focusing on visual presentation has a negative impact on interaction design. It is very important for teachers. Good visual presentation can improve the professionalism of the overall interaction design case output and is also a reflection of your comprehensive ability.
The portfolio should preferably contain 3-4 complete projects and the number of pages should be controlled within 20 pages.
Third, the portfolio is like a simplified picture essay. You must have a strong and outstanding point of view;
This point of view can be graphic or textual. describe. To write this "paper" well, designers must be clear about their position and value. If the positioning is execution, then your portfolio must have design cases that strengthen execution and related descriptions.
There is no reason why one work will be popular in the world, unless your coverage is very comprehensive and includes various types of products. Generally speaking, when interviewing for different positions, you need to make appropriate adjustments to your portfolio.
Through the details of the portfolio, including visual derivation and interactive thinking process, the screener will rate your application.
Finally, the way the content of the portfolio is demonstrated must be able to withstand scrutiny.
Design value, thinking, logic and other contents do not necessarily have to be shown in the portfolio, but you must go through it yourself, and it must be very logical, clear and organized. Why?
Because the interviewer attaches great importance to these questions, they will definitely ask them during the interview.
In general, when organizing a portfolio, the first thing to do is reflect the match with the position, and the second thing is to supplement those non-core design ability assessment elements. This is the core of organizing the portfolio.
