Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley designated the day when the statue was unveiled as "Cloud Gate Day" on May 15, 2006. Kapoor attended the celebration ceremony, where jazz trumpeter and leader Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Symphony Orchestra performed "Fanfare for Cloud" composed by Davis. Gate)". The public viewed the statue from a different starting point and affectionately called it "the pod." "Cloud Gate" became a popular public artwork and a staple on souvenirs such as postcards, sweatshirts and posters. The statue attracts many citizens, as well as tourists and art lovers from all over the world. It is the most well-known of Kapoor's many artworks.
Time magazine called the statue a must-visit place for tourists to take photos. As a work of art, it is a masterpiece. Time magazine also described the statue as a "tourist magnet" and a "remarkable work of art," while USA Today called it a "monumental work of abstraction." Chicago art critic Edward Lifson considered "Cloud Gate" one of the best public works of art in the world. The American Welding Engineering Society awarded the "Extraordinary Welding Award" to MTH Industries and Performance Structures. Time magazine also named Millennium Park one of the top ten architectural achievements of 2004, calling "Cloud Gate" one of the park's major attractions.
I wanted to design something in Millennium Park that would be silhouetted against the sky so that people could see the reflections of the floating clouds and skyscrapers. And, because of its door-like shape, people can go inside the statue and see themselves just as they see the city from the outside.
Anish Kapoor
Police in Metra stopped a Columbia College Chicago journalism student who was taking photos when the park opened in 2004. He was working on a photography assignment based on Millennium Park at the time) and had his film confiscated due to concerns about terrorist activity. The park caused some controversy in 2005 when it refused entry to a professional photographer who did not have a permit. Since all artwork is protected by U.S. copyright law, Kapoor owns the copyright to the statue. Although the public is allowed to freely take photos of Cloud Gate, any commercial use of the photos must first obtain permission from Kapoor or the Chicago government. For the first time, the Chicago government has instituted a policy of charging fees for photos. They plan to charge professional photographers $350 per day, professional videographers $1,200 per day, and wedding photographers $50 per hour. But they later changed those policies so that only large film, video and photography production crews requiring 10-person crews and equipment would need to pay.
The closure of the park for private events has also caused a lot of controversy. In 2005 and 2006, the park was closed for almost one day for corporate events. Cloud Gate, a popular attraction in the park, took center stage in both events. Toyota Motor Sales USA paid $800,000 on September 8, 2005, to rent the attraction, including Cloud Gate, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Allstate Insurance Company (Allstate) paid US$700,000 to rent the park on August 7, 2006. The fee included the right to visit different attractions in the park after 4 pm and the exclusive use of "Cloud Gate". These companies do not allow visitors to approach Cloud Gate and force them to use other passages to bypass the statue. The Chicago City Commission later stated that the funds would be used to support free public programming in Millennium Park.
