When getting started, you should also talk about image quality. Nikon D5100 vs. Sony A580
IT168 Review From the beginning of the year to now, the competition among entry-level SLR cameras has never stopped. Nikon's popular D5100, Canon's small and powerful 600D, Sony's all-rounder A580, Pentax's color SLR K-X... Just looking at the parameter configurations of these models can easily dazzle users. In fact, what everyone needs is a camera that can take "good-looking" photos, and this depends on the camera's image quality.
▲The picture quality performance of entry-level SLR is actually whether the photos look good?
From the current market point of view, Nikon D5100, as Nikon’s advanced entry-level SLR, has attracted much attention since its release. It is rising day by day and getting good reviews. The outstanding market performance of Sony A580 is somewhat unexpected. The mid-range parameter indicators and the kit price of less than 5,000 yuan make this SLR camera the most affordable model in the market. Faced with two entry-level SLRs with good reviews and good sales, how should we choose? Before comparing the image quality, let’s first understand the characteristics of the two machines.
▲Basic features of Nikon D5100
▲Basic features of Sony A580
From the picture above, the parameter configurations of Nikon D5100 and Sony A580 are comparable. . The Sony A580 released last year uses a 16.2-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and supports FullHD shooting and 3D panoramic scanning shooting. It has 15 focus points, can achieve high-speed continuous shooting of about 7 frames per second in speed priority mode (locked AE/AF), and has a 3-inch/920,000-pixel flip-up LCD screen. The Nikon D5100 has full HD camera capabilities, 11-point autofocus system, EXPEED 2 processor and 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor. This configuration is very competitive among entry-level SLR cameras at the same time.
Both entry-level SLRs use a flip-screen configuration, but the details are slightly different. In addition, Sony has put a lot of effort into the display. Although the parameter configuration is the same as that of the Nikon D5100, which is 3 inches and 920,000 pixels, the naked eye observation effect is slightly better than that of the Nikon D5100. The flip screen effect is as follows:
Nikon D5100 flip screen effect
Sony A580 flip screen effect
Whether the photo looks good or not, you have to look at the two machines. The performance in terms of picture quality is impressive, and we can all turn the page.
Comparison of image quality between Nikon D5100 and Sony A580
Nikon D5100 and Sony A580 also use CMOS sensors
, and the size and pixels of the two CMOS sensors are exactly the same . Although neither Nikon nor Sony has stated it clearly, according to past practice, Nikon D5100 and Sony A580 should use the same photosensitive element. In this way, who has better picture quality?
During the image quality test, we shot Nikon D5100 equipped with AF-S 50mm F1.4G lens
and Sony A580 equipped with Sony 50mm F1.4

From the comparison chart above, you can observe the performance of the two products in terms of sharpness and resolution. In terms of horizontal resolution in the center, the Sony A580 performs slightly better than the Nikon D5100, while the Nikon D5100 has the best sharpness at F5.6. In terms of vertical resolution, the Nikon D5100 performs better than the Sony A580 at wide apertures. However, at the edges, the overall performance of the Sony A580 is better.
Sharpness and noise control ability test
After reading the summary of the data, it is more meaningful to look at the actual shooting effects of the two cameras when the sharpness value is only used as a reference. . How do the D5100 and A580 perform in actual shooting? You can take a look at the slice samples taken by the two cameras in the same scene.

Sony
The sensitivity range of the A580 is ISO100- 12800, Nikon D5100 is ISO100-25600. The A580's picture below ISO800 is very delicate, and the noise at ISO800 and ISO1600 is not obvious, but the sharpness of the picture is slightly reduced.
At ISO3200, the noise of the A580 becomes obvious. Continuing to increase the sensitivity will cause a loss of details and an uneven color transition in the pure red part. As for ISO12800, it is only suitable for use in certain emergency situations.
Compared with the Sony A580, the Nikon D5100 has excellent picture details below ISO400. After increasing to ISO800, although there is slight noise, the picture texture is still delicate. At ISO1600, the picture begins to show slight color drift, but overall it is still within the acceptable range. Noise and detail loss become obvious at ISO3200. As for ISO6400 and higher sensitivities, serious noise and detail loss will occur, so the practical value is not high.
In this comparison, the Sony A580 has good noise control capabilities and resolution, and the overall feeling is slightly better than the Nikon D5100.
Color performance and comparison summary
Nikon and Sony have different imaging styles. Although it is difficult for users to explain why, we can use the help of professional software to briefly explain Let’s talk about the imaging effects of Sony A580 and Nikon D5100.
▲Sony A580 imaging color performance
▲Nikon D5100 imaging color performance
The above two test pictures reflect the actual imaging color values ????of Sony A580 and Nikon D5100. The difference between ideal values. The part surrounded by gray lines in the picture is the color gamut range of the two SLRs. The square color blocks in the test image are the ideal color values, while the round color blocks are the actual shooting values. The color tone of Nikon D5100 is warmer, which is different from previous Nikon cameras, but this is more in line with the user's visual habits. The color performance of the Sony A580 is faithful to the original color of the subject, but when viewing the original film, there will be a feeling that it is not vivid enough (it should be noted that the display viewing effect of the Sony A580 is slightly different from the original film effect).
Comparison summary
Through this image quality comparison, although the two SLRs use the same photosensitive elements, the Sony A580 is slightly inferior in terms of real-shot clarity and color reproduction. Better than Nikon D5100. However, Sony A580 still lags behind Nikon D5100 in terms of menu design and overall controllability, which is also important for entry-level users. At present, the price of two SLRs on the market is less than 5,000 yuan. If the user's demand is just to make the photos more beautiful and not to learn photography systematically, then the Sony A580's performance seems to be more comprehensive.
