The ultimate problems that lingered in Xu Heng's mind from time to time during his creative process. It seems difficult to give a good word to describe Xu Heng's artistic creation. His conceptual video works have touched on topics such as gender, sexual orientation and the relationship between men and women in China today. However, through the appearance of his works, his works imply his deep spiritual aspirations. Since 23, Xu Heng has borrowed himself as a model in all his works. In these works, he dresses up as different female characters and poses with different female postures. In his recent works, he added more elements of post-digital video production to help him express his artistic ideas.
Xu Heng's first work with the theme of "gender role transformation" was at the end of his second year at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 23. Titled "Iiiiiiii", Xu Heng appeared in the same living room seven times as a young woman, and at the same time, the artist sat in the left back corner of the image with his own image and looked directly at the camera. This shooting experience is completely impromptu, and it is also an extremely exciting personal experience for the artist himself. Since "Iiiiiiii", this work has opened a new artistic creation world for Xu Heng, which has also become an important turning point in his creation.
In the next three years, Xu Heng turned a one-time impromptu experiment into a carefully planned artistic creation plan, and he also changed from a simple artist to a multi-artist identity integrating fashion designer, stylist and model. In 26, his work "My 17 Fronts and Backsides" was the result of his unremitting efforts and creativity. In this work, Xu Heng plays several female roles: a well-behaved traditional girl, a girl in uniform, a show girl and a ballet dancer. The work reflects the typical female image of women in today's male-dominated society through the role-playing of artists.
From 27 to 21, Xu Heng spent another three years creating a series of new works "Shell". At the same time, the artist also chose more refined visual language to express his aesthetic concepts. Different from the simple pose in previous works, with the deepening and complexity of the ideas behind Xu Heng's works, he began to use more digital imaging technology to help him realize his ideas. In the new work, while his own female image appears, the images of male and female artificial models are added to the work. The new series of works reveal the incompleteness of the individual as a human being-a man or a woman, and this desire for integrity is reflected in our daily life as the mutual attraction of the opposite sex. Xu Heng brought this pursuit of integrity into his artistic creation. In his works, he is complete, both physically and spiritually. Artists expect to present viewers with more diverse perspectives through their works, and also hope to help them cross the surface and see the inner spiritual essence through their works.
