Introduction:
Joe Buck came to new york from Texas to earn some money by serving ladies on Park Avenue. He thought it would be more attractive if he dressed as a cowboy, so he bought a cowboy costume. His strange clothes did not attract the lady's attention as expected, but a prostitute came to ask him for money. Buck met Lazo Rizzo, a dirty cripple. Rizzo said he could find customers for Buck, but he asked for ten dollars. Buck took out his last ten dollars, only to find that Rizzo introduced a gay man. Buck went to get even with Rizzo angrily. When he bent down to get the money back, he found Rizzo's physical condition was extremely bad. Knowing the truth, Buck sympathized with Rizzo and helped him to live in his shabby home. They lived alone. At first, they had the hope of getting rich quickly, but they soon found that they were not suitable for living in the urban jungle. Rizzo is very ill. Buck extorted a sum of money from the homosexuals who pestered him and took Rizzo to the warm south, but Rizzo died of illness.
Behind the scenes production:
Midnight Cowboy is the masterpiece of "New Hollywood Movie". Great changes have taken place in American society in the 1960s. Due to the doubts and confusion about the Vietnam War, the promotion and spread of sexual freedom, the proliferation of hippies and lawless elements, social disorder, and the surge in criminal cases. In such a turbulent era, some film directors began to use irony to launch a series of films criticizing American social ills. Midnight cowboy is one of them. Midnight Cowboy, based on James Leo Herlihy's novel, describes the tragedy of a cowboy who feels good about himself and rushes into a modern city, symbolizing the disillusionment of the traditional American spirit represented by cowboys. Because the film involves too many homosexual and sexual scenes, it became the first film in the United States to implement "X" production (that is, teenagers under 17 are not allowed to watch). This film won the 42nd Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Before the 1960s, homosexuality was a taboo issue in the United States, which was founded in the spirit of Puritanism. For the first time in an American film, this film openly reveals the problem of homosexuality. The film premiered in the United States, causing an uproar. Some people condemned the film as "dirty and immoral", but more people thought it was a serious discussion of the long-standing social phenomenon in the United States. What makes this film really thought-provoking is that it exposes all kinds of dark sides of American society with a critical attitude towards reality and shows the alienation and loneliness of people in modern society. This is also the common theme of "New American Movies". The film deeply and subtly mocked the out-of-control state of the American government. For many years, Hollywood, a dream factory, always aimed at the upper-middle class and whitewashed reality. Before the 1970s, American movies rarely touched the lives of the lower class in the United States. Schlesinger dared to take the lead in facing the miserable life of the people at the bottom of the metropolis in the late 1960s.
The film uses documentary techniques, and adds a long shot, a big color block and a pitch shot of stream of consciousness to highlight the dazzling subjective feelings of cowboys when they come to the metropolis. Known by the media as "genre painting of street life in new york" and "romanticism in the trash can". At the same time, Schlesinger's use of short-shot flashback in the film has also become a major feature of the film's image style. Schlesinger's use of color is also very distinctive. At the beginning of the film, in order to express Joe's fantasy about new york, the director used high-profile photography and bright colors to show the scenes in Florida. However, Joe used a dark and low-key expression in new york's bottom social life, and set off the atmosphere with psychedelic colors at hippie parties, putting Joe in a colorful metropolis, which made a sharp historical contrast between decadent modern men and women and naive "western cowboys".
Trivia:
According to producer Jerome Hellman's explanation in the double DVD, the famous line "I'm walking here" is not just from the script as rumored. The taxi driver is actually an actor who is hired to drive for dustin hoffman. The film crew treated the scene here as improvisation.
In order to make his limping consistent in different shots, dustin hoffman always puts some pebbles in his shoes.
Before auditioning for the film, dustin hoffman knew that he was an American and would easily get the role. To prove that he could do it, he told the producer to meet him on a street corner in Manhattan, dressed in rags. The producer came to the designated corner and waited, hardly noticing that a beggar was begging from someone within ten feet. Finally, the beggar came up to him and showed his true identity.
The only film that won an Oscar for best picture with a limited X rating.
When the film was first released on 1969, the rating was "X" (you can only watch it after X) (17), but this rating was soon related to pornographic films because pornographic directors abused the rating. Due to the poor reputation of the previous rating of X, the film got a new rating of R at 197 1 (children below R (16 must be accompanied by parents or legal guardians), and the others were not changed or abridged.
The teenage female fans of this graduate (1967) screamed when they saw dustin hoffman appear on the streets of new york to make a movie, even though he was dressed in rags and played Rizzo.
The movie line "I'm walking here! I am walking here! " Selected as 100 movie lines by the American Film Association, ranking 27th.
