who is Chen Shiceng? He is the eldest brother of Chen Yinque, a master of Chinese studies, a master of Chinese painting in the early 2th century, and also a scholar with considerable accomplishment in the theory of poetry, calligraphy and painting.
Qi Baishi and Chen Shiceng met in 1917, and they hit it off as soon as they met each other, quite feeling like they met bosom friends. Qi Baishi was born in 1864, and Chen Shiceng was 12 years old. He is a native of Xiangtan, Hunan Province. He became a painter from a carpenter and is quite famous in his hometown. Qi Baishi traveled all over the country after he was 4 years old, and met many celebrities in the art world, which greatly broadened his horizons. His poetry, calligraphy, painting and printing are all excellent, especially ink painting has reached a new level. He used to be good at meticulous brushwork, but now he is longer than the flowers and feathers, and he has become a great painter with great personality.
This year, Qi Baishi came to Peiping for the second time to avoid bandits and chaos in his hometown and to further develop his art, and lived in Fayuan Temple. He described the process of meeting and making friends with Chen Shiceng in "The Old Man's Self-Report of Baishi" as follows: "I hung up the embellishment of selling paintings and engravings at Nanzhipu of Liulichang. Chen Shiceng saw my engraved seal, and came to Fayuan Temple to visit me. Under the interview, it was a row. Shi Zeng was able to draw large freehand brushwork flowers, and his brushwork was vigorous and magnificent, which was very famous in Beijing. I took out the Book of Borrowing Mountains from the basket and asked him to identify it. He said that my painting style was high, but it was not exquisite enough. When we see the same thing, our friendship will get deeper and deeper. "
Before I met Chen Shiceng, Qi Baishi's paintings had their own distinct personality and reached a high level, but they were not valued by the world. Few people buy his paintings. The reason is that, although his painting skills are not exquisite enough, more people look down on Qi Baishi because of his carpenter background.
Qi Baishi once mentioned a "celebrity" who claimed to be a scholar. He looked down on Qi Baishi's carpenter background, and his brow always showed a disdainful look. He even looked down on Qi Baishi's works. He secretly said that Qi Baishi's paintings were rude and his poems were unreasonable, which was simply worthless. He also said that Qi Baishi had no book background, and the paintings he painted were not bookish, vulgar and could not be elegant. For such a person, Qi Baishi ignored it and let it be discredited. He said: "If the painting is good or not, the poem won't pass. Who is better than who? After a hundred years, there will be public comments. Why fight for the length of the day?"
However, Chen Shiceng, who stood in front of him, not only understood his paintings, but also attached great importance to his personality, which really made Qi Baishi happy and felt that he had met a bosom friend. Chen Shiceng originally knew Qi Baishi's name from engraving, but now he has seen his "Borrowing a Mountain Map" (which was painted by Qi Baishi when he traveled far away), which made him shine at the moment. Although the "skill" of seal and the "clumsiness" of painting seem to be different, they have their own interesting points, especially Qi Baishi's paintings are by no means "rude" and "not elegant" as some people say. On the contrary, he thinks that Qi Baishi's "high style" is different from others' personality performance. The reason why the world doesn't value his paintings is because people don't understand his paintings yet, and they look at his paintings from a traditional perspective.
Chen Shiceng advised him to "create his own style, and don't seek to flatter the common customs". Since then, Qi Baishi has taken "painting my own painting to suit the ancient times, why should I bow my head and seek common ground" as his lifelong motto. Nevertheless, it is an obvious fact that Qi Baishi's paintings are not understood and appreciated by more people. He lives by selling paintings, and the price of his paintings is half lower than that of ordinary painters. Even so, few people care about it. So, how can we change this situation?
Chen Shiceng helped him find a way, which is what he called "his own style", that is, "inventing new ideas and adapting painting methods": he can not only keep his original high painting style, but also make a breakthrough in the original painting method to gain more people's understanding and appreciation. Chen Shiceng also put forward specific methods for his paintings. Qi Baishi seriously considered his opinion and thought it was reasonable to hit the nail on the head.
After pondering and practicing, Qi Baishi finally created a school of "red flowers and green leaves" in Chinese painting after he was 6 years old. This kind of freehand brushwork with a large sum of money has a rich life breath and a warm and unrestrained mood, giving people a splash of ink and a magnificent aesthetic feeling. Qi Baishi's "old age reform" made more people look at the old man with new eyes.
Chen Shiceng respects his best friend more, and he will never forget to introduce and publicize Qi Baishi whenever he has the chance, so that more people can know him. In 1922, he took his and Qi Baishi's works to Dongdu Fusang to participate in the Sino-Japanese joint painting exhibition. At the exhibition, the Japanese snapped up his and Qi Baishi's works, and their paintings were sent to the Paris Museum of Art by French candidates. Qi Baishi's paintings sold at a very high price, with a small painting selling for 1 yuan and a two-foot painting selling for 25 yuan, which was unthinkable in China at that time. After the exhibition and publicity abroad, Qi Baishi and his works became famous. He once wrote a poem to laugh at himself: Ceng Dian's rouge is apricot blossom, and a hundred gold feet of paper are praised by many people. All my life, I was ashamed to kill my surname, and all the countries in the world knew the old painter.
The later Qi Baishi is not what he used to be in China. He used to have a lot of people, but now he is busy.
Foreigners bought a lot of his paintings, and the antique dealers in Liulichang begged him to do business with his paintings. Even some arty people invited him to paint, and his painting career flourished day by day. Qi Baishi, who knows best the friendship of friends, said with deep affection: "I will never forget the kindness that my teacher has given me."
However, what Qi Baishi never expected was that Chen Shiceng left him forever in 1923, the year after he became popular. This summer, when Chen Shiceng learned that her grandmother was dying, she hurried back to Nanjing to visit her. He has always been filial, serving soup and medicine at home. After his grandmother died, Chen Shiceng was in poor health. Due to excessive grief and hot weather, he suffered from dysentery and died on the seventh day of August at the age of 48. Qi Baishi heard the bad news, which was like a bolt from the blue. He wrote an elegiac couplet to mourn the untimely death of his best friend: three is not many people, and creation is pity, and I am jealous if I don't kill Jun Tian; It's easy for a thousand years, but it's hard to bury your land.
Qi Zishi later recalled: "I lost a bosom friend, and my heart felt extremely empty, so I couldn't stop crying. He made many corrections to my painting, and I listened to him and gradually changed it. He also took my advice with an open mind ... It's a pity that he only lived to be 48 years old. What a sad thing! " Since then, every time Qi Baishi saw Chen Shiceng's paintings, he would inevitably write poems to mourn.
Chen Shiceng has gone, but Qi Baishi is still following the path of "creating his own style and painting himself", unswervingly following his own path and eventually becoming a world-class artist. Hmm. How interesting
