Jie Hailong's personal experience.

The famous photographer Jie Hailong said four words: "The West is not the West". Using one's own photos to change the fate of poor children, the representative work of the famous photographer Jie Hailong-Hope Big Eyes Project has fully illustrated this point. This personal photo collection "I Want to Go to School", which won the special contribution award of China Press Photography Society, makes people feel the great impact and appeal brought by photography. This is the photographic power of Jie Hailong. Jie Hailong's photography practice of Project Hope provides a new possibility for people to understand the social function of photography from many aspects. When he introduced his documentary photography, he said: When he began to hope for documentary photography, there were "nearly 200 million illiterates" in the mainland of China, while "there were as many as 4 million students lost in remote areas every year, among which one quarter of them dropped out of school because of poverty." Faced with such a harsh reality, Jie Hailong spent ten years, starting from 1990, traveling more than 20,000 kilometers, visiting 128 counties in 26 provinces of China, contacting tens of thousands of children in more than 100 schools and taking tens of thousands of photos. He wants to use photos to fight for the right to education for rural children.

As a photographer, Jie Hailong's courage, conscience and perseverance have to be respected. Jie Hailong not only kept a precious visual document for us with his images, but also promoted the attention of the whole society to the serious practical problem of out-of-school children. He also suggested a direction for all serious photographers in China and the basic humanitarian values as a photographer. "Big Eyes", which reflects the hope project, finally won the highest transaction price of 308,000 yuan, and photographer Jie Hailong's hanging heart was finally put down. "I am worried about the auction". Take out your tie from your pocket and fasten it. Here comes the reporter. "What they care about is how to spend the money. I said that I want to build a hope primary school in Tibet, which is where photographers yearn. " Jie Hailong said, "But the more important issue is that through this market test, we know that the value of photographic works has been recognized." In ten years, Wan Li, 26 provinces and 120 counties, Jie Hailong has presented an "old-fashioned and shabby" China in front of people. At first, he didn't expect that these pictures would be accepted, let alone have a market one day. So, even though the auction has passed for several days, he still feels unreal. There is a bitter story behind every photo. The story of another work he participated in this time took place in Shanxi. When Jie Hailong first met Duan Jicun, he thought the boy was a liar. 1March, 992, Jie Hailong entered Shenyugou Township, Shanxi Province. Before that, he just met with local county cadres and listened to them talk about how bad the education situation here was in the past. Jie Hailong understood their ambivalence. "On the one hand, they want to use us to change the backward education situation in the local area. On the other hand, they are also afraid of being accused after the incident is exposed. " So Jie Hailong decided to go around the mountain by himself. That day, it was windy and there was a thin layer of snow on the ground. A countryman is walking on the dirt road at the entrance to the village. Jie Hailong came running. This man is about forty years old, thin, blue cloth, police tactical unit, black cloth shoes. "Hometown, is there a school near here?" The man paused and said, "Yes, come with me." Cross the beach, go uphill and plunge into the ditch. He and this man are the only two people on the long mountain road. "How far is it?" "Not far." The man put Jie Hailong's luggage on his back and walked with difficulty. I don't know how long it took, but Jie Hailong couldn't help asking, "How far is it?" The man said, "Not far, just a pack of cigarettes." Pass him a cigarette. Pass him another cigarette. Half a box of cigarettes has been smoked, but there is still no school. Jie Hailong thought, "Don't be a liar. Where is he taking me? " Don't go, Jie Hailong said angrily, "How far is it?" The man repeatedly apologized and said that he was a teacher in that school, named Duan Jicun. In fact, it was 80 miles from the village to the school, and he had to turn over two beams, so he lied for fear that Jie Hailong was too far away.

Finally, on a hillside, Duan Jicun shouted, "Class is over ..." Three children emerged from a cave in a depression not far away. There is a big millstone on the slope, and the children climb up and spread out their books. Duan Jicun also took out a book from me and started class. Duan Jicun told Jie Hailong that the village was so big that there were only three children who should go to primary school. Because the village is far away from the school, they built a simple primary school here. Not long ago, the classroom collapsed and there was no money to build a new one, so we had to have classes on the millstone. Jie Hailong held teacher Duan's hand and couldn't say anything else. "Thank you, thank you!" This photo, which was later widely spread by the domestic media and selected by Time magazine in the United States, has an influence throughout the country and even the world. It recorded the scene in which Teacher Duan Jicun gave a lecture to three children lying on a millstone, which was named "All Teachers and Students".

Eight years later, Jie Hailong returned to Shenyugou Township and found Duanji Village. At that time, Mr Duan was already teaching on the second floor of the new school building. Teacher Duan told Jie Hailong excitedly that the little girl lying on the roller of the millstone had been selected to attend a nursing school in Singapore-only three people were selected in the county-and sent him photos.

After nearly six years, Jie Hailong once again set foot on that "not far" mountain road and met Duan Jicun again. Teacher Duan said that the little boy in the photo has become a cadre of loufan county Taxation Bureau. Jie Hailong told Duan Jichu 13-year-old son a story about him and a "peasant" four years ago, which made the young man very fresh.
