Brazil of CCTV's large-scale documentary BRIC

1) Aruanda, 1960, 20 minutes, black and white, 35 mm, directed by Lindualte noronha, photographed by Lac Vieira.

One of the most important new wave documentaries in Brazil in 1960s. This film, full of poetic images and realistic humanistic care, records the daily scenes of a family living in the arid area of Paraba State in eastern Brazil. They are descendants of Quilombo (a resistance organization composed of a small group of aborigines who successfully escaped during the initial slavery period), and like their parents, they live a hard and simple life in barren land. Due to the neglect of the dictatorship, they are completely isolated from the rest of Brazil. The film was shot in the early stage of the New Wave Movement, aiming at finding the true roots of the Brazilian people. This director is a pioneer of left-wing films in Brazil.

2) Carmen Santos, 1969, 16 minutes, black and white, 35 mm, directed by Jurandy Passos Noronha, photographed by Andre Palluch, edited by Julio Heibron, produced by Eduardo Ruegg.

The documentary is about Carmen Santos (1904- 1952), a famous Brazilian actress and producer in 1930s. Carmen Santos played a key role in the development of Brazilian national films. She has starred in classic silent films such as Blood of Miners in Humberto moreau and Borders of Mario Peixoto. After 10 years' efforts, she finally finished one of the most expensive films in the history of Brazilian cinema, Untrustworthy Minella, in 1948, becoming the first female directors in Brazil. This documentary combines precious photos of her early years with movie clips.

8)DREZNICA, 2008, 14 minutes, color+black and white, 8 mm->; 35mm, director Anna Azevedo, photographer Anna Azevedo, editor Eva Randolph, music Rodrigo Marca+Lucas Masieh. Award-winning: Brazil Exhibition of Panorama Unit of Berlin International Film Festival in 2008; Best experimental short film award at Rio de Janeiro Film Festival in 2008.

"DREZNICA" means "snow on the sea". This experimental documentary is the latest work of Anna Azevedo of female directors, Brazil. Her last work, The Ball in Berlin, won the Berlin Short Film Unit Award at the Berlin Film Festival today, but I only have this one at present. This film is a collection of 8 mm images shot by Anna herself. This is a typical "private documentary" about her family, children and travel life (Naomi Kawase style). It can also represent that independent filmmakers in Brazil are trying new creative fields.
