"Hungry Sudan"

There is a photo, you must have heard of it.

In this painting, the hot sun scorched the African land, leaving only a little yellow grass on the ground. A girl was lying on the hot ground because of hunger, and her ribs were clearly visible. Behind her, a strong vulture is staring at the little girl. Against the background of the two, girls who should be healthier are particularly thin and helpless.

This photo named "Hungry Sudan" won the Pulitzer Prize for Story Photography in 1994.

It's just an ordinary photo. Dimming and composition are not brilliant. How to stand out? This is because of its shooting significance and background. In 1993, there were frequent wars in Sudan, and the people were miserable. At the same time, the great famine broke out and people's lives could be imagined. Kevin carter, a freelance photojournalist from South Africa and the author of this photo, came to Sudan, a hungry African country.

One day, he happened to catch a glimpse of such an amazing scene: a girl was skinny with hunger and walking helplessly on the way to the food relief center. A vulture in the back greedily stared at the "prey" in front of him. Kevin carter hurriedly raised his camera and took this photo. This is the "Hungry Sultan". At the same time of achievement, public opinion is also rising: people begin to question the author's values, accuse him of ruthlessness and groundless, and firmly believe that he left his children to fend for themselves. Even Kevin's relatives and friends gradually began to alienate him.

According to Kevin himself, he waited for 20 minutes after shooting and drove the vulture away before leaving. Then I watched the little girl and her mother go to get relief. The whirlpool of public opinion is unfathomable, and it disappears when you swallow the facts in one gulp. Two months later, people's ignorant accusations finally defeated Kevin and committed suicide with carbon monoxide. Such an ordinary and upright photographer was forced to commit suicide by cold violence. Verbal violence is something more terrible than punching. It's an invisible sharp knife that goes straight into the heart. This may have been lurking around us, and it is just around the corner to resist it.

At the end of Kevin's suicide note: "The pain of life far exceeds the degree of happiness" is a monologue of people trapped in public opinion. When people are freed from the attack of wheels, the degree of happiness will definitely exceed the pain of life.
