Professor Mao Xiaolan has been engaged in fungal taxonomy and species resources research for a long time. He is the most famous expert on fungal taxonomy in China today. Participated in the famous scientific expedition in Tianshan and Himalaya, Hainan, Xisha and Tianya Haijiao in China, and collected tens of thousands of fungal specimens through hardships and dangers. It undertakes 4 national fund projects and 2 major support projects of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has written more than 30 academic works and published more than 60 research articles on fungal species diversity, resources, ecology and geographical distribution. At the beginning of 2003, China Macrofungi, which he edited for five years, won the 13th China Book Award. This is the first time that China mycology books have won the National Book Award, which has become the honor of mycology industry in China in 2003.

Over the past 40 years, with his wisdom, talent and perseverance, he has not been afraid of difficulties and hardships, endured humiliation and worked hard, and achieved fruitful results that are rare in the world. There are Tibetan mushrooms, edible mushrooms, Hong Kong mushrooms, illustrations of medicinal fungi in China, edible fungi cultivation manuals, modern research on Ganoderma lucidum, and the magical Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon. ⑤ Mao Jun's hobbies are painting and photography: he not only took many color photos of wild mushrooms, but also drew many line drawings and morphological scientific maps of mushrooms, which were exquisite and realistic, and were exhibited in Beijing, Hong Kong, Australia and the United States for many times, and won great praise. In 2004, he won the "highest honor award" in the scientific painting illustration exhibition held by China Science and Technology Museum. In 2005, more than 300 large-scale fungal popular science paintings were exhibited in this museum and Nantong, Jiangsu.

He has served as Secretary-General of China Fungal Society, Secretary-General and Executive Vice President of China Fungal Society, Vice President of China Edible Fungi Association and Executive Director of China Food Culture Research Association.
