What are the characteristics of the rhythm of Stravinsky's music works?
Although Stravinsky adopted classical genre and form, his creation always runs through some unique characteristics, the most prominent of which is his rhythm. For example, the ballet Puccini adopted the melody theme of18th century Pegolesi, but its internal harmony and rhythm were marked by Stravinsky: its harmonious texture was replaced by stronger power, balanced phrases and rhythms were broken, regular stress was replaced by syncopation, and the orchestration was Stravinsky-style. For another example, the piano concerto, piano sonata, serenade in A major, piano and band capriccio in the above works all have strong motives. The melody in the middle band of the piano concerto is 2/4 beats, accompanied by the piano in the high-pitched area, and the bass is 3/8 beats. Its finale is also a combination of syncopation rhythm of18th century and Stravinsky's unique rhythm. Serenade in A major not only embodies the principles of "contrast" and "competition" in baroque music, but also embodies the characteristics of Stravinsky's tonality expansion, that is, taking A note as the harmonic base point, it is completely free to play in each key, only occasionally turning around to "point" the tonic, the subordinate and the third degree during the performance. Another example is the tonality conflict in the first movement of the Psalm Symphony: its triad is in E minor, and the melody outlines seven chords in B-flat and G-flat, resulting in sharp contradiction between B-flat and B-flat on the same melody, which in turn constitutes a double contradiction with the triad above E-flat. The rhythm of this work also changes frequently and has a strong sense of motivation.
Stravinsky's creations are numerous and skillful, and he has always maintained inexhaustible creative vitality. He had a great influence and was a master of music in the 20th century.
