A Brief Introduction to the Story of Dream Life

Based on the life experience of Taiwan Province puppet master Li Tianlu in the first half of his life, the film slowly tells a "dream life" and reproduces the bumpy life and extraordinary experience of Taiwan Province Province during the Japanese colonial rule through the interweaving of Mr. Li Lao's own oral memories and the reconstructed scenes. Li Tianlu's oral memories alone account for one third of the film. He described his life in front of the camera: the discord between his grandfather and his father, the death of his mother, the ruthlessness of his stepmother, studying with his father, his grandfather died, he left home after falling out with his father and stepmother, he wandered around with the puppet troupe and was married by his son-in-law in the woman's house.

In the film, Li Tianlu, the protagonist, appears on the screen to recall the past, witnessing each other with the historical scene and living atmosphere carefully reconstructed by the director and the whole opera performance (including Beijing Opera, Taiwanese Opera, Puppet Show and even Japanese propaganda drama). In the extraordinary and calm picture control, fixed lens position selection and a series of affectionate long shots, China's films are full of restrained and implicit charm.
