Introduction to undergraduate majors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany
Design
The learning purpose of the design major is based on unimagined research, development and design practice based on design. Emphasis on artistry, experimental and innovative processes, as well as known and proven technical design. The master's research program, which is built in continuity with the study program, is centered around students' independent artistic research projects and aims to promote the further development and professionalization of personal design and to discover and establish significant unique selling points for future designers.
Film
This master's program focuses on the art of filmmaking, not on a major film career. Study in this course will expand and refine the technical, theoretical and artistic abilities learned in previous undergraduate courses through the creation of a film project.
In addition to the creation of projects and their direct supervision, students' activities will focus on training in the understanding of film as a medium, ranging from traditional film techniques to modern digital filmmaking techniques, and include their aesthetic significance. Students will analyze methods of presentation in film and how they vary across novels, documentaries, and animations.
PHOTOGRAPHY
The starting point for photographs as images—in the context of historical images and in other art forms—is the subject of art photography. The quality of the photograph acts as a trace of imprint and, at the same time, displays abstraction and construction that provide a wide range of approaches, opening up the concept of art and the conception of the work of art. In the form of the chosen media, the processes and methods of presentation and the way they are combined, the limitations of the medium itself can be questioned and expanded by the means of production, for example through photographic extra-thematic appearances, installations, projections, film montages or books of artistic concepts .
Graphic Design/Typesetting
The master’s program will alternate between experimental and practical assignments. Through students' parallel and complementary analysis of their own creative situations, the possibilities for artistic expression in various project environments are studied. In this case, analysis means through creative/artistic intervention—a consideration based on the choice of artistic techniques. History and media serve as a reference source for engagement with typography, design and art. In addition to creativity and artistic analysis, the cultivation of communication skills during the design process is an important part of the project. In conjunction with the specific disciplines and courses offered, it is the responsibility of the master's student to create a laboratory environment that not only facilitates analysis but also allows individual artistic plans to be realized.
Painting and Drawing
The purpose of the Painting and Drawing major is to expand students' personal artistic concepts and abilities, as well as their critical analysis, theory and practice of painting and drawing throughout history and today. Ability to practice problems.
Students’ learning and research are structured with their own artistic development intentions in mind, and their personal artistic status is strengthened through the interplay between practical work and concepts. Core areas of study on the course are practical artistic practices, which include the processes of technical painting and drawing and techniques for printing graphics (etching, lithography, silkscreen). Students will also gain knowledge about work planning and strategy, presentation and publishing techniques, production, functional aesthetics and aesthetic effects. In addition to the annual exhibitions, the University's own galleries also offer opportunities to explore and discuss the works on display and reception.
