Behind-the-scenes production of out-of-control super junior

The director's daydream

Shu Hua Tranca is the new director. He once directed a little-known TV series called Critical Moment. As an independent director, this is his debut. As for the inspiration of this film, Shu Hua Tranca admitted that it came from Cleverness: The Ghost Record 2. At that time, Trunca was shooting some shots on the set of Clever: The Ghost Record 2. The movie that found the story from the video attracted him, so he also wanted to make a movie with a similar story frame. So what will the story be like?

Shu Hua Tranca said: In fact, the story of this movie is a daydream, a daydream about the ability of high school boys. In this daydream, the boys got the legendary super power. Moreover, superpowers can be the same as muscles, and they can become stronger with diligent practice. It seems like a fairy-tale daydream, but movies can't always be so interesting. Later, this daydream turned into a nightmare. Because he doesn't know how to control his superpowers and family misfortune, Andrew, the protagonist of the film, becomes a prisoner of superpowers.

Although this is a movie about superpowers, Shu Hua Tranca doesn't want to portray his protagonist as a superman flying in the sky, but wants to shoot this movie on the ground. In other words, in the film, all the protagonists are ordinary people. I want to give this movie a real and normal feeling, he said. The reactions of all the characters in the film to the events are authentic and belong to normal people. What they do in the film is the most natural and normal reaction of teenagers. In this movie, we can't see Superman, and we can't see the transformation of those roles from ordinary people to heroes. All we can see is a group of children who have done something wrong and can't control themselves It can be said that, except for those super-powerful stunts, this movie is a movie about teenagers' life and mentality, and it is also a youth movie.

Realism and special effects

Special effects and realism seem to be a bunch of irreconcilable contradictions, because after adding a lot of special effects, the realism of the film will naturally decline, and in order to pursue rough realism and realism, it is natural not to use too many CG animations. In this film, director Shu Hua Tranca just wants to make a sense of the scene. He said: an idea from "Smart: Ghost Record 2", we also want to build this story from the perspective of DV data. When three friends go to play together, there will always be someone with DV, and then this friend will record all kinds of play experiences in detail. So, I began to design stories and shoot from this angle. What I like and appreciate most is the sense of reality produced by the jitter and out-of-focus of hand-held cameras. In the process of shooting, I always think of Herzog's Grizzly Man. Photography in that movie is just what I need most.

The center of the film tells the content of friendship. Tranca said: This story tells a journey of friendship and self-discovery. Everyone in the film is growing up through an incredible journey. Although growth comes at a price, it is very worthwhile. When shooting such a story, it is very necessary to create real special effects, because too fancy things will weaken the emotional power of the film. Tranca said: We didn't highlight the existence of special effects in the film, and everything was low-key and smooth. These special effects did not destroy the realism of the film, but increased the realism of the film in those DV materials. This is like the shooting technique of clover archives, because simple special effects can always achieve the greatest effect sometimes. This seemingly random DV material is actually full of Shu Hua Tranca's greatest ingenuity. For these seemingly random things, Shu Hua Tranca drew many storyboards. He said: this is the most difficult thing to arrange in the movie, because everything has to look casual and natural, and then everything has to be explained clearly, all the ins and outs and so on. My crew and I made a lot of storyboards and shooting charts, rehearsed a lot, and shot them countless times before shooting them.
