In the memories of friends of the same age, Wen Xingzhang's self-study of French is particularly striking. Her daughter recalled: "I still remember my mother translating Truffaut's screenplays to learn French in the late 1970s, so that I knew there was a' new wave' at an early age. I still remember that before I left, she was going to study French at the Language Institute, and she got up early in winter. People in their forties have classes with young people in their twenties and thirties. I really don't know if I can persist. Only such people can take on the role of historical bridge in their own works, which we realized only after a long time.
