What is the refuge lane?

What is the escape route? Escape lane refers to a special lane added outside the lane of the long steep slope downhill section, for vehicles with out-of-control speed (brake failure) to leave the main line safely.

There are four escape routes: uphill, horizontal ramp, downhill and sand pile.

For example, the Yaxi section of Beijing-Kunming Expressway in Sichuan is a relatively steep expressway in China, while the 5 1 km-long Tuowushan-Shimian Expressway, also known as the "Devil's Devil Section", is almost downhill, which is also rare in Asian expressways. Moreover, high altitude, close to cliffs and many sharp turns are great risk factors for trucks. Therefore, there are as many as six escape lanes in this section, one every 10 km, almost all near sharp turns and steep slopes, and there are eye-catching signs every four or five kilometers to inform the distance of the escape lanes ahead in advance. The length of most escape lanes is more than 100 meters, with an angle of 50 degrees. There are many pebbles on the ground, which will jam the wheels, increase friction and slow down the speed. According to a rough estimate, about 30 trucks rush into the emergency lane every year after the brakes fail, thus avoiding the tragedy of crash death. For example, in the early morning of June 20, 20 16, when a truck was driving to Liziping section of Yaxi Expressway, the brakes suddenly failed. After taxiing for three or four kilometers, the driver made a sharp turn ahead and rushed to the nearby escape lane. Due to the huge inertia, the truck rushed to the end of the 100-meter-long escape lane and didn't stop completely until the front of the car was suspended. The driver and the owner escaped from the door, just like a Hollywood thriller.
