Biography of Explorer

Liu Chengzhi

Environmental hiker on the Great Wall

From May 18, 22 to September 22, 221, I hiked the Great Wall for more than 3,7 kilometers.

In many people's eyes, the "post-9s" should be the age to work hard in the workplace, but Liu Chengzhi, a young man from Xingtai, Hebei Province, chose naked resignation.

Obsessed with China culture, he set out from Shanhaiguan and embarked on a trip on foot on the Great Wall. Before leaving, he did three things full of ceremony:

-wearing a five-star red flag, his patriotic feelings and spiritual beliefs;

-Bring the flag of "Walking the Great Wall of Wan Li for Public Welfare and Environmental Protection", which he hopes to convey through this walk;

-"with the aim of invention"-never cut his hair until he has finished the Great Wall, which is his determination in this trip.

493 days later, Liu Chengzhi arrived at Jiayuguan Tower, becoming the hiker who walked the Great Wall completely and left the most records and photos. The official client of Xinhua News Agency produced a feature film about him walking the Great Wall and promoting the protection of the Great Wall based on his video material.

Beyond books and filters

The ruin and desolation of the Great Wall are shocking

Before walking on the Great Wall, Liu Chengzhi, like many people, thought he was familiar with it. After all, in books and photographers' shots, the great barrier of Badaling Great Wall is vast and magnificent, and it has already been deeply rooted in people's hearts.

after he really walked the Great Wall, his original cognition and vision were all disillusioned.

"The Great Wall has been beautified too seriously, even distorted. It is far more desolate and lonely than I expected."

The city walls, one of the strongest defense systems in the past, have been baptized by war and years, but now many of them are ruined. Different types of Great Wall have been damaged in different ways and degrees in different territories.

Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing and Liaoning sections of the Great Wall, which are mainly made of bricks and stones, are mainly damaged by the pass.

The hollow watchtower near the village was almost destroyed, and all the stones and bricks were removed to build houses and pigsty. In the Battle of the Great Wall in 1933, Japan's destruction of the Great Wall in Beijing and Hebei was also serious.

After crossing Zhangjiakou to the west, it's basically the Great Wall of Earth, which was destroyed largely because of natural disasters such as mudslides, earthquakes and floods. For example, many of the Great Wall in Datong, Shanxi Province were destroyed by rain and flood.

Man-made destruction also exists in this area. The shepherd nearby allowed the sheep to walk on the Great Wall because of the lack of protection consciousness.

the destruction of the great wall in Gansu and Ningxia mainly comes from crops. Farmland is too close to the Great Wall, sometimes seeds will be blown to the Great Wall by the wind and grow into plants or trees, causing the wall to crack or collapse.

"Any man-made factors such as urban construction, farmland demand, mining and folk customs may destroy the Great Wall. For example, when we entered Shandan County, the Great Wall disappeared directly, which was really distressing. This is the status quo I have seen. "

Because the Great Wall is so huge, the state, local governments and individuals can't get in or out of it, and its protection is extremely limited. The effective protection of the Great Wall is less than 1%, and most of this 1% comes from profit-making scenic spots, such as Juyongguan, Mutianyu, Badaling and Shanhaiguan.

Except that the Great Wall in these scenic spots can be maintained and repaired in time, most areas can only do constructive emergency repair, that is, try their best to strengthen it before it falters and make it last a little longer. Or rely on some non-governmental organizations and outdoor donkey friends to organize some protection activities spontaneously.

For example, Yuan Jianqin, director of Shanxi Datong Great Wall Cultural Tourism Association, communicated with local villagers to ask them not to drive sheep and cattle to the Great Wall, and gave them armbands to protect the Great Wall, calling on everyone to protect the Great Wall together; Gao Qiuyan, president of Yulin Great Wall Protection Volunteers Association, built a protective belt with barbed wire to enclose the Great Wall first.

What Liu Chengzhi can do on foot is to clean up some rubbish for the Great Wall. Every time I go down the mountain, I have to carry a big bag full of plastic products, beverage bottles and other kinds of garbage.

At the same time, he uploaded his recorded images of the Great Wall to social platforms, which made many people have a real and comprehensive understanding of the Great Wall.

"I think this is another angle to spread the Great Wall. Even if I can't do anything personally, at least I can give feedback to some organizations protected by the Great Wall and let them do something."

Camping on the Great Wall

It's like staying in the most luxurious apartment

Being alone doesn't mean loneliness, but more freedom. Liu Chengzhi likes to explore alone, completely independent and open in different time and space, and live in harmony with nature.

"Camping on the Great Wall is like being in an ancient city with a history of thousands of years. I think the most luxurious apartment in the world where I live is very exciting and happy."

Liu Chengzhi cherishes his time with the Great Wall, and even takes a nap and sometimes chooses an enemy building to live in. Cooking is even more cautious, and he dare not leave any garbage. As long as he sleeps in the watchtower, he must clean it up.

camping meets snow scene

However, camping on the decaying and dilapidated Great Wall, even facing collapse, has certain stress.

Generally, the site of camping is the enemy building. The enemy building is usually divided into several passes and vouchers, and at least one voucher should be selected for complete camping. There is a big crack, or some enemy buildings built by snakes, pigeons and squirrels need to be avoided. If it's a thunderstorm and rainy day, enemy buildings with more trees should also try to avoid and prevent lightning strikes.

tents also need to be set up inside enemy buildings, one for rain protection and the other for protection against snakes, insects and animals.

Snakes are the animals that Liu Chengzhi met most in the Great Wall, and he has met with Agkistrodon halys and Bungarus multicinctus many times. A few times, he and the snake were almost next to each other and almost stepped on it. Fortunately, snakes generally don't take the initiative to attack. Only when they are hungry, mating, protecting their eggs or feel that you are a threat to them can they attack people.

Compared with climbing in the dangerous section of the Great Wall, I almost fell into the abyss several times, and the danger brought by some animals is not worth mentioning.

xifengkou was smashed into shock, and five platforms fell off the cliff

The Great Wall in xifengkou is beautiful, but it is also famous for its dangers. Liu Chengzhi lost his way when he was going down the mountain to Dayaoyuan, mistaking a hole washed out by water for a road. When walking down it, his foot slipped and he immediately lost his center of gravity and fell rapidly.

Fortunately, he was quick of eye and deft of hand, while slipping, he firmly grasped a tree on the ground, but after all, he didn't escape the gravel under the tree. A stone hit him right in the back of the head, and Liu Chengzhi went into shock instantly. It took more than ten seconds to regain consciousness.

at this time, when he looked up, he had slipped down two or three meters; Looking down, there is a steep cliff tens of meters deep below.

Liu Chengzhi weighed more than 2 kilograms, and the force was slightly different. It was probably a slide. He didn't dare to move, and after doing some psychological construction, he crawled up and crawled.

Another moment of life and death happened in Wutaitai, Suizhong County, Liaoning Province. It was a jagged awl-shaped mountain, where many outdoor players were killed.

Liu Chengzhi happened to be caught in the rain on the day he arrived, and he walked. Only halfway through, he suddenly found that there was a cliff under his feet, and the terrain changed from a slope to an inward depression, and people stood on it in a dilemma.

When he chose the original road to return, and went down to the bottom of the cliff by another road, he found a stone mound, next to which stood a stone tablet, which read "My good brother".

"The whole fortifications of the Great Wall are complete and connected, but the walls are not completely connected. It is often a big cliff when you walk. You can only see one enemy tower and one beacon tower, because the mountain is the wall, and five towers belong to this situation."

Historical residual temperature on the Great Wall

The Great Wall, which has witnessed the vicissitudes of life for thousands of years, has created many loyalty and kindness as well as how many wolf smoke has been quelled, where countless soldiers' blood and homesickness are buried. Although a large area is desolate now, the residual temperature of history is still burning.

A section of the Great Wall in Jizhen Town was built by Qi Jiguang, a famous anti-Japanese soldier of the Ming Dynasty, and all the soldiers came from the south with him. Therefore, this section of the Great Wall is full of poetry and painting in the south of the Yangtze River and has its own characteristics.

The enemy towers here are not square like other lots, but have different shapes, such as diamond-shaped buildings and witch buildings, which make people shine. Some elements of bonsai, flowers and paintings carved in their hometown are faintly visible on the stone of the ticket gate on the first floor. The homesickness and the heart of serving the country are all embedded in the Great Wall.

In Luohan Cave at Jielingkou, bullet holes left by the war between the national army and the Japanese army in 193s declared to the world the tragic war.

In Naziyu section, a string of "alien symbols" carved on a stone left people with endless reverie.

There is an Arrow Tower in Zuoyun County, Datong City, Shanxi Province. According to legend, fox spirits live in it, and whoever demolishes it will bring bad luck, so it can be completely preserved.

Another famous Gothic church in Zuoyun County is located in Bataizi Village. Bataizi Village is a small village built on the edge of the Great Wall, which is named after the number of piers on the edge of the village is "eight". In China, there are only seven places that are also known as Christian holy places and have files in the Vatican, and Bataizi Church is one of them.

in Liu Chengzhi's view, these historical sites and the distinctive sections of the Great Wall, if slightly restored and developed into scenic spots, may be better protected like Badaling and Shanhaiguan Great Wall.

"The Great Wall of Shilin and Banchangyu Scenic Area have a strange landscape eastward, where stones meet enemy platforms, just like a fairyland; Earth Great Wall, the Gobi Desert in Yanchi, Ningxia, can see red and alkaline earth, which is also unique; The comparison between the Great Wall on the water, the Xiangshui Lake and the eighteen caves is expected to become a scenic spot. "

Inheritance of exploration and culture

"Walking through the Great Wall will enhance personal value and national brand. More determined, I want to spread the concept of protecting the Great Wall and protecting the environment to more people. I hope that through positive guidance, everyone can practice high-quality travel more actively and optimistically. "

For Liu Chengzhi, this trip is not only the inheritance of hiking adventure, but also the inheritance of the Great Wall culture.

Along the way, while feeling the Great Wall, I also got the companionship and support of many Great Wall volunteers. We shared our experiences of the Great Wall and discussed ways to protect it.

To protect the Great Wall of Earth, "planting trees to prevent sand+building guardrails" is an effective way; The protection of the Great Wall can be guided by correct propaganda. For example, some trees and shrubs can be cleared under the guidance of experts; Pick up garbage and protect the ecology; Never carve words on the Great Wall ...

"I hope everyone can learn more about the ways of getting along with people, mountains, water, the Great Wall and the outdoors, and we must protect our resources, so that these landscapes, cultural relics and historical sites will not only become our pride, but also become our pride for future generations."

Next, Liu Chengzhi plans to walk the Great Wall in two months. He will race against time to leave more high-definition images for the Great Wall before some broken walls collapses and disappears.
