My Opinion on Creation —— Reflections on the Art of Oil Painting
Abstract: The creation of artistic works is a complex spiritual activity and production activity, and it is the product of real life reflected in the painter's mind. Artistic beauty is the high unity of truth, goodness and beauty, and it is the conscious purpose that all artistic creations must set. Every artist should show his unique feeling and understanding of beauty in his works. The beauty of reality and the ugliness of reality are the source of artistic creation. What is usually regarded as content is only the true form of artistic expression itself, while what is usually regarded as the only form is the true content of a work of art, which is the carrier to convey the author's feelings, thoughts and aesthetic ideals through images and techniques. Key words: artistic creation, artistic beauty, realistic beauty, realistic ugliness, content form, artistic creation is a complex spiritual activity and production activity. It includes two aspects: one is the observation, experience and aesthetic comprehension of social life; The second is to express this aesthetic comprehension with material media materials and technical means, and make it materialized. In this way, before an oil painting becomes a work of art, it has to go through two stages, the former is the conception stage of creation, and the latter is the communication stage of artistic creation. This creative activity is a process of pursuing artistic beauty. So, what kind of works are real works of art? Or what kind of works have artistic value? Susan Langer said: "Art is the creation of symbolic forms of human emotions. All art is a perceptual form created to express human feelings. This created form is for our senses to perceive or imagine, and it represents human emotions. " In Greek, the word art has two meanings: first, it refers to beautiful works; Second, it refers to creation, skill and skill. Art is an artificial technical product with aesthetic value. From this, we can draw some enlightenment. When we praise a work of art, it often contains two meanings: one is that the expression of this work is beautiful, and the other is that the production process of this work is beautiful. These two different evaluations, the former is about things and works. The latter is for people and artists. A real work of art must meet two basic conditions: first, it must be the creation of human labor and wisdom, and second, it must give people a spiritual pleasure, that is, it has aesthetic value. These two points can be said to be the fundamental characteristics that distinguish works of art from fakes. We must first get rid of an illusion. Some people think that all beautiful things belong to art, which makes no distinction between natural beauty and artistic beauty. Although natural beauty can be the object of art, it is by no means the real art itself. Oil painting expresses the beauty of nature and reproduces the beauty of reality. But artistic beauty is not equal to natural beauty, it is higher than natural beauty. Oil painting works reflect the beauty of reality, and the beauty of things in reality is a powerful basis or source for oil painting creation. For example, there is a life scene: under the twilight sky, there is a couple of farmers who are dressed simply and healthy, standing obliquely in the field, both of them with their heads down and their hands on their chests, with a cart and a basket full of potatoes beside them. When they were ready to go home after a hard day's work, the church bell rang in the distance, so their faces looked pious and solemn, and both of them quietly said evening prayers. Isn't this a typical rural life scene in France in the19th century? In this life scene, don't we see the simple and kind personality of the working people and the harmonious and sincere relationship between people? Yes, however, this kind of scenery and beautiful scenery in real life is described for us by the French farmer painter Miller in his masterpiece "The Late Bell".
Real life is rich and colorful, and art is produced with this rich and colorful real life as its source under certain historical conditions. In reality, whether people, natural objects or social objects, as long as they are related to human social life, they can all become the source of artistic creation. If there is no colorful real life, there is no so-called art. Of course, some things that are not beautiful or ugly in reality can also become the basis of artistic creation, embodied in art, and become the artistic beauty of works of art after being processed and transformed by the painter's aesthetic consciousness. In fact, people have many misunderstandings about art and beauty. People always think that art is beautiful; Everything that is not beautiful is not art, ugliness is a denial of art, but art is not necessarily beautiful. In other words, art can not only create the beauty of reality according to beautiful reality, but also reflect the ugliness of reality according to ugly reality, and transform the ugliness of reality into artistic beauty through aesthetic creation. Why can beautiful art show ugliness? For artists, the problem is not to express the ugliness of the object, but to express the ugliness well.
For example, in Rodin's masterpiece The Beautiful Omer (also known as The Old Prostitute), the ugliness of reality magically turned into the beauty of art. Rodin himself explained: "Ordinary people always think that the ugliness of reality is not artistic material-they want to forbid us to express things in nature that make them feel unhappy and offend them. This is their fault. What ordinary people call "ugliness" in nature can become very beautiful in art. When Velazquez painted Sebastian, the dwarf of Philip IV, he gave him such a touching look. We immediately understood the inner pain of this disabled person-in order to survive, he had to sell his dignity as a human being and become a plaything and a living puppet. Miller showed a poor farmer, a poor man who was destroyed by fatigue and sunburned by the sun, as dull as an injured animal. When he leans on the shovel handle to catch his breath, as long as he depicts the fate of the enslaved, he can make this nightmare figure the best symbol of all mankind. In the works, the essential category of realistic ugliness is transformed, its reality is weakened and its artistry is strengthened. The images in the works are no longer ugly things or characters in the original reality, but have infiltrated subjective spiritual factors such as the understanding, emotion and evaluation of the creative subject, thus becoming typical images. It reveals the essential truth of social life from the opposite side, which is the truth of image, that is, the beauty of art, and the profound analysis and denial of ugliness is the affirmation of beauty. Rodin's The Old Prostitute, Sebastian Mora by Velazquez, Moeller's Helping People, Zhu Da's White Eyes to People, and Lotus Waterbirds are all the same. In the history of Chinese and foreign art, there are many successful works that turn reality ugliness into artistic beauty.
In fact, ugliness is only the ugliness of the subject matter, which only constitutes the expression of works of art; Beauty comes from the artist's wisdom and expressive force, which forms the deep structure of artistic works, which shows that the value of beauty is beyond. In natural beauty, it transcends nature and reaches a rational structure that seems anthropomorphic. In human art, it has surpassed human beings, as if it had returned to its true colors and truth.
In oil painting, what is usually regarded as content is actually just the true form of artistic expression. What is usually regarded as just a form, that is, the artist's ability and skill to express beauty, constitutes the real content of a work of art, and people's evaluation of a work is determined according to this content.
The Madonna of Raphael looks like this. In an old theme that has been shown thousands of times, he endowed it with brand-new artistic content with his exquisite attainments. Therefore, this form of death has gained new soul and life. His artistic expression is so profound, as Hegel praised: "We can really say that all women can have such feelings, but not every woman's face can fully show such a profound soul."
A thing is beautiful only if it fully reflects its essential truth with the truth of its phenomenon, the inevitability of its content with its concrete form and the universality of its species with its image personality, and this phenomenon, this form and this image must be very prominent and vivid. This is the law of beauty.
All works of art are inseparable from images and vivid visual forms; All excellent works of art cannot be separated from the creation of highly realistic and generalized visual images, and cannot be separated from the creation of artistic models; Art works that create typical art must fully show the truth of social life in its vivid visual form, and at the same time highlight the sincere thoughts and feelings of the creative subject and the beauty of personality. As an aesthetic value, this emotion embodies the inherent value character and ideal of art in culture. This is the beauty of art.
In this sense, the artistic beauty of artistic works is a trinity of truth, goodness and beauty, which is highly unified and has been integrated into artistic aesthetic experience.
In oil painting creation, artistic beauty is inevitable. Because beauty is the conscious purpose that all artistic creation must set. Every artist should show his unique feeling and understanding of beauty in his works.
The essence of artistic ideal is to restore external things to things with spiritual essence, so that external phenomena conform to the soul and become the expression of the soul. (Hegel)
But in modern society, some people who want to get ahead through art are always thinking about what to draw and what kind of painting can be famous. This kind of painting lacks sincerity to art and real feelings that can move people. Such people are actually studying the road to success, not the art itself. What is important in oil painting is not what kind of content you draw, but the content is just a carrier to express your feelings and attitudes towards life. The society is constantly developing, and our understanding is constantly changing. Drawing is to record this change, just like keeping a diary, recording your understanding of life, your feelings, and drawing the most exciting things that interest you. In fact, there are many things that can be drawn. The key is to truly reflect life and your true feelings.
The most painful thing about painting is that you have a spark of inspiration in your heart, but you can't show it. Hegel's famous saying is very vivid: "The artist often encounters this situation, and he feels depressed, but due to the image of depression, his emotional intensity has eased and weakened." Even in tears, there is a comfort. "Painting is sometimes an emotional catharsis.
Painting is a kind of visual art, which is the product of real life reflected in the painter's mind. This kind of reflection is not a mechanical and passive reproduction of life, but a re-creation higher than life. Painting creation is a spiritual labor with strong personality and emotional color, and it is an emotional expression inspired by the collision between life and soul. Paintings are the carrier to convey the author's emotional thoughts and aesthetic ideals through images and techniques.
Wu Guanzhong once said: Artists are a group of people who look forward to beauty the most. The first duty of an artist is to express the faint sadness about the fate and future of mankind carried in his own blood, and to infect others to make them think.
I describe the impressions of people living on the edge of the city, observe and experience the development and changes of the times from my own perspective, and reveal the kindest, simplest and most beautiful side of human nature with images. I deeply feel that they have something close to my heart, accompanied by my breath. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's a touch! But he always attracts me and touches my heart.
