A webcam connects to your computer usually via a USB cable. A simple webcam contains a lens, a simple focus system and basic sensors. They convert and compress the digital video stream and send it to a receiver elsewhere on the Internet. Network cameras range in complexity, from simple video cameras to sophisticated cameras only with advanced features.

History

The first webcam was installed in 1991 using a video camera and frame grabber. From here, the development of a simple, low-cost webcam begins.

Types

Web cameras range from computer screens to much more sophisticated devices with built-in facial tracking and very small cameras with advanced features. The most common webcams either sit on a desk or monitor and are connected to the computer via a cable.

The most common use for network cameras is in personal video conferencing systems via popular instant messaging services. Network cameras also function as network security cameras. They are often used the same way as CCTV cameras.
