Jishou University, founded in September 1958, is a local, national and provincial comprehensive university approved by the State Council and built in the border area of four provinces (cities) of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing and Guizhou. The school is located in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture and Zhangjiajie City, and its headquarters is located in Jishou City, the capital of Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture. The school is close to Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Natural Scenic Area and Fenghuang, a famous historical and cultural city in China. There are five expressways and three railways running through Xiangxi, Zhangjiajie Lotus Airport and Tongren Phoenix Airport, which makes the transportation between Xiangxi and neighboring provinces and cities very convenient.

In June 2003, the school was awarded the right to master's degree, and in September 2006, the school was awarded the excellent conclusion of the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level by the Ministry of Education.
