When you take pictures while playing outdoors, you will always hear people next to you say that it is backlit.

The so-called reverse light and smooth light are seen from the position of the photographer (camera). The main light source (the sun) shines from the front of the photographer, which is the backlight; On the contrary, when the light comes from behind the photographer, it is reflective.

From the perspective of the horse fight, when the horse fight is facing the camera, the main light source (the sun) shines on the back of the head of the horse fight, which is a backlight, and the front is a smooth light. In the sunset, backlight can take very beautiful photos with film effect.

Small and fresh photos with backlight style, the whole character bathed in the sun, very hazy and dreamy, very popular with girls. Many girls hope that their boyfriends can take this beautiful backlight effect for themselves.

So what exactly is backlight? What are the characteristics of the small refreshing effect of this backlight? How can I shoot it well?

First, the idea of backlight shooting

When shooting, let the girls turn their backs to the sun, and the photographer shoots along the direction of the light, which is backlight shooting. To be more specific, backlight can be divided into front backlight and side backlight.

1, positive backlight

When shooting, let the "sun-sister-camera" be on the same straight line, and the camera is facing the direction of the sun, which is called positive reflection shooting, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

2. Side backlight

If the photographer's shooting angle forms an angle of about 45 degrees with the direction of the sun, it is called side backlight, as shown in Figures 3 and 4.

Second, the characteristics of the backlight effect

By comparison, we can see that the photos with backlight effect have the following characteristics:

1. The backlight photo screen is bright as a whole, and may be overexposed locally, so the photo is more transparent, which accords with the small and fresh feeling.

2. The character's hair is backlit, and the "gold edge", the so-called "side light", is very beautiful, as shown in Figure 6.

3. There will be a lot of direct light entering the lens when backlighting, which is easy to produce halo effect and make the picture hazy, as shown in Figure 6.

These characteristics are only available when shooting in backlight, which is also an important reason why backlight photos look good. Then how is this effect taken? Next, we will tell you the shooting process in detail.

Third, how to shoot the backlight effect?

Backlight photos need plenty of light, so it is best to take them on sunny days, and it is best to choose about two hours before sunset.

Shooting time should not be too early, otherwise the sun is too strong, which will easily lead to white background. In the evening, the sun's rays are softer and more suitable for shooting. And with the passage of time, the light color will gradually change from bright white to warm orange, and the backlight effect will be more atmospheric (see Figure 7-9).

Fourth, shooting equipment.

In terms of lens, it is recommended to choose a large aperture lens when shooting portraits, such as Canon 50mm/F 1.8. If you don't have a large aperture lens, you can also shoot with a telephoto lens such as 18-200mm.

Because a small fresh photo with backlight needs to use a large aperture or a large telephoto to form a blurred background and create a hazy feeling. There is no specific requirement for the camera to shoot backlight, and both micro-single and SLR can be used.

1, AV file, F 1.8 maximum aperture, ISO 100~400, evaluation photometry.

Adjust it to Av file (called file by Nikon and Sony) and set it to the maximum aperture F 1.8. Because the sunlight is good, ISO can be set to 100~400, and the shutter time can be set by the camera itself. The measurement mode is set as the default evaluation measurement, as shown in the following figure.

2. Increase exposure compensation-the key to make the whole picture brighter.

The next step is very important: increase the exposure compensation of+1~+2 files.

Why increase exposure compensation? There are two important reasons:

On the one hand, when shooting backlight, my sister's back is facing the light, so the light on her face is insufficient, and it is easy to shoot her as a "big black face", as shown in figure 13, which is also the most common problem for beginners to shoot backlight, so we need to increase the exposure compensation of 1~2 to make her face brightness normal, as shown in figure 14. In the end, how much exposure compensation to increase should be adjusted according to your own situation, as long as the basic brightness of your sister's face is enough.

Tips:

1. Two important reasons for increasing exposure compensation:

On the one hand, the first important feature of the small refresh effect of backlight itself is that the picture is generally bright, so this feature should be realized by increasing exposure compensation, even if the background is overexposed.

Another very important aspect is that when shooting backlight, my sister's back is facing the light, so the light on her face is insufficient, and it is easy to shoot my sister as a "big black face", which is also the most common problem for beginners to shoot backlight, so we need to increase the exposure compensation of 1~2 files to make my sister's face brightness normal. In the end, how much exposure compensation to increase should be adjusted according to your own situation, as long as the basic brightness of your sister's face is enough.

In addition, after turning on the flash, you can't be too far away from your sister, because the general flash irradiation range is about 3 meters. If it's too far, you can't fill the light.

2. Use single-point autofocus

In order to focus on the girl's face accurately and ensure that the face is clear, you need to set the focus mode to single-point autofocus (see the figure below), and then you can adjust the focus point at will.

3. How to ensure the side light?

Teach you a trick: if you can see the complete shadow of your sister's head on the ground after she stands in position, then her head will be illuminated by light. If the shadow is incomplete, it must be blocked by some obstacles, and it is very likely that the side light will not be photographed.

As mentioned earlier, the second important feature of the small refreshing effect of backlight is the side light, which is generally most obvious near the girl's hair, so the girl's head must be illuminated with light.

If you use a bright scene such as the sky as the background, the side light will not be so obvious, as shown in the figure below. After learning to find the side light, there is another trick. When shooting, the dark background can make the side light more obvious.

5. How to shoot a beautiful halo to make the picture feel hazy?

The reason for the halo is that the lens shines directly at the sun when shooting in reverse light, and more direct light enters the lens. But if too much light enters the lens, the halo will be too strong and the picture will be too blurred.

Halo is the third important feature of small refresh effect of backlight. Halo creates a feeling that the girl is bathed in the sun as a whole, which makes the photo more hazy and makes the girl shine.

The second most effective method is shadow. When shooting, you can use leaves, buildings and even your sister's body, such as head and shoulders, to block some direct light.

Therefore, it is best to have a halo in the backlight, but the halo should not be too strong. There are two ways to control the halo: the first is to change the shooting angle. For example, more light enters the lens under positive and negative light, and the halo will be bigger and stronger, so switching to side backlight shooting will naturally make the halo weaker.

Finally, I will help you briefly summarize the main skills of backlight shooting:

1. Adjust the lens angle properly or find an obstacle to form a beautiful halo effect;

2. Let the girl's head shine as much as possible to produce side light;

3. Parameter setting of small fresh backlight: AV file+maximum aperture +ISO 100~400+ evaluation metering+single focus+increase exposure compensation 1~2 (this is the key point, please keep in mind).
