Bugs Bunny also wears white gloves. Why do classic anime characters always wear white gloves?
Because it makes the movie look rounded and simple. ?
Seeing animated characters like Mickey Mouse and Guppy wearing gloves can be confusing. When animated films first started, everything relied on hand drawing, using specific techniques to make the process of shaping the animation style more efficient. For example, Garfield's face looked very square, but due to its popularity, animator Bill Noah removed its long nose and made it round. They called this animation design Tubes and Circles, which took the cartoon character's arms and drew them in the shape of spaghetti and applied them to Mickey Mouse.
With the beauty of the animated hose and round designs, animators can quickly create impressions without spending time sketching actual details of the body such as elbows and knees. Since drawing circles is much faster than drawing angles, logically all fingers and finger joints are drawn this way. In the age of blurry black and white movies, another problem has arisen for animation. In a black and white film, it's difficult to distinguish a black body from a hand. Take Mickey Mouse, for example, whose hands are as black as his feet in 1927's Planes of Madness. In 1929, he put on gloves at the mansion. Based on this, the animation style of the hose is utilized to the maximum extent. The characters are exaggerated, rounded, and simple. Like many comic characters wearing gloves from the Mickey Mouse era, Mickey Mouse is not human, but what humans do.
In his 1968 biography "The Disney Edition", Walt Disney mentioned this issue. He said: ?We didn't want him to have rat hands because he should be more humane, so we put on gloves. ?Thus, in addition to saving time and providing color contrast, the gloves also bring to life the non-human characters, focusing on the characters to highlight their poses. This was the case with Veblen Studios' 1935 teapot, as was the character in the movie camera. When Pinocchio was a puppet, he wore gloves. But when he became a boy these gloves disappeared and they were no longer needed.
