Yao Yong was born in a Tsinghua family and grew up in the Tsinghua compound. He studied violin in elementary school and entered the brass band of middle school in junior high school. He studied under Professor Hu Bingyu, the principal of the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music.
