Nikon Corporation of Japan has been producing photographic (image) lenses for nearly 60 years, and has always been famous for its high definition and large contrast. It is a temporary choice for news, architecture, industry, medicine, remake, plate making and color photography. What is particularly rare is that the quality is extremely stable and there has never been a big ups and downs; In numerous tests and appraisals, it has always been among the best, maintaining a high-quality image, thus gaining the high trust of the majority of professional workers and photographers. So how does Nikon keep the lens quality leading in the industry?
Close-up correction system
Generally, when the lens is shot in the middle or no scene, it can usually get clear and pleasing picture quality. At close range, the image quality decreases with the increase of aberration. The degradation of image quality of large aperture lens in close-up is particularly serious, not only for large aperture wide-angle lens with asymmetric anti-telephoto structure, but also for large aperture lens with symmetric structure. In order to solve this problem, Nikon adopted its unique close-range correction system (CRC), that is, the floating lens system to correct the difference between close-range cameras. When shooting close-ups, one group (sometimes two groups) of lenses in the lens moves with different amplitudes relative to other lenses to correct the aberration increased by the change of object distance, thus improving the imaging quality. Because the floating range is generally very small, mostly in the range of 1 mm, the accuracy of mechanical structure is very high, which greatly increases the manufacturing cost. Nikon has spared no effort to use this close-up correction system to strictly correct the image field bending phenomenon in the wide-angle lens with serious close-up quality degradation. Some telephoto lenses with large close-up errors also adopt close-up correction system, which basically eliminates the added spherical aberration during close-up. These lenses can ensure high resolution and excellent imaging quality from infinity to the nearest focus distance.
Nikon integrated coating
The reflection of light on the lens surface and the absorption of light by glass will produce ghosting and glare, reduce contrast and destroy color reproduction. In order to solve this problem, all the lenses of Nikon lens are coated with multiple layers of extremely thin films. Because the coating is not only beneficial but also harmless, and the more coatings, the better. Too thick coating in Otawa will play a harmful role in filtering out a part of the visible spectrum. Therefore, different from other manufacturers, Nikon incorporated this multi-layer coating process called Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC) into the design of each Nikon lens, and accurately marked the number of coating layers required for each lens according to factors such as lens type and glass material, so as to achieve the best matching state. In this way, all Nikon lenses greatly reduce glare and ghosting, and improve the contrast of images.
From the test results of a batch of imported Japanese lenses, Nikon's fixed-focus and zoom lenses not only have the highest transmittance, but also all the test values of color diffusion index are in the middle of the international standard tolerance range, and all the test values are almost the same, with excellent interchangeability. It can be seen that Nikon's lens design and coating process are really outstanding and the process is extremely stable.
Ultra-low dispersion glass
Photography is based on light imaging. Black-and-white panchromatic film or color film requires blue light and red light to be focused on the same plane to prevent dispersion and reduce definition. Standard lenses and wide-angle lenses will not have this problem, but for telephoto lenses, especially those with a focal length exceeding 180mm, as long as the focal lengths of red light and blue light are slightly different, the sharpness and color reproduction of telephoto lenses will be greatly affected. Compared with short focal length lenses, Nikon has developed a new type of ultra-low dispersion glass (ED glass), which can not only overcome this shortcoming, but also be as hard and scratch-resistant as other optical glasses, so it can be used as a lens before and after exposure.
Most of Nico fixed-focus lenses use ed glass to eliminate dispersion from 180mm to 3000mm, and all fixed-focus lenses with focal length of 400mm and above use ED glass. Some telephoto zoom lenses also use ED glass. Because the dispersion phenomenon is greatly reduced, the phenomenon that the discrimination rate of long focal length lens is always much worse than that of short focal length lens has been obviously changed. So although it is much more expensive, it is widely welcomed by photographers who demand high quality.
Internal focusing mode
In the process of focusing, all lens groups of the whole lens must move back and forth in the lens barrel, so the length of the lens is also telescopic. This complex focusing mechanism greatly increases the volume and weight of the whole lens, which may bring difficulties to hand-held shooting. In order to solve this problem, Nikon developed an internal focusing (IF) system. When focusing, only the focusing lens group moves inside, and the lens length remains unchanged, which simplifies the lens structure and greatly reduces the volume and weight of the lens. Even some super telephoto lenses may be hand-shot, which makes focusing faster and easier. The internal focusing system can also shorten the recent shooting distance of the lens and improve the imaging quality of the telephoto lens at close range. Nikon has a very strict quality assurance system to ensure the implementation of all technical measures and the long-term high stability of product quality. From the raw materials of optical glass to the final assembly test of lens through various complicated procedures, Nikon has been under the repeated inspection and control of precision instruments and skilled technicians. Although the cost has increased and the price of Nikon lenses has increased, the phenomenon of missing inspection of unqualified products has been eliminated, which has reassured every customer. What Nikon customers admire most is Nikon's spirit of being responsible for products to the end. Although the function of 135 SLR camera is constantly innovating, which forces the lens interface to change dramatically or even fundamentally, Nikon's latest F4 camera can continue to use the old lens produced 30 years ago (that is, 1960), which is indeed a unique initiative, indicating that Nikon not only pays attention to every lens in production, but also does not forget all the old lenses delivered to customers in the early years. This "customer view". Millions of Nikon lenses all over the world not only promote Nikon's high quality, but also become a strong link between Nikon and customers. This is the biggest mystery of Nikon's enduring.
