The World Photojournalism Competition (WPP) is sponsored by the World Photojournalism Foundation headquartered in the Netherlands, so it is commonly known as "Jose". The foundation was established on 1955. Since the first world photojournalism competition was held in 1957, it has been held for 5 times so far, making it the largest and most prestigious photojournalism competition in the world. In the past 10 years, WPP has gradually become familiar to the photography circles in China and attracted more and more attention. This shows that since the reform and opening-up, the world outlook of China's photography industry has been increasing.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto by American photographer John Moore won the first prize of 5 1 breaking news single film 1955, which was composed of three old Dutch photographers-Keith scherer, Ben van Mirendonk and Bram wiesmann. Its purpose is to "arouse and enhance people all over the world's extensive interest in news photography, spread information and strengthen international mutual understanding." Therefore, since 1957, the foundation has held the annual world photojournalism competition and exhibition in Amsterdam every year.

The World Press Photography Foundation (1988 was sponsored by Kodak Company of the United States and Canon Company of Japan outside the Netherlands, and the word "Netherlands" was deleted) is an independent, non-profit and politically independent cultural organization. It is supported by the Royal Dutch Government and recognized by the world. KLM is the main sponsor of WPP. Hymanskodak was the first foreign sponsor, and later Canon and IBM joined the sponsors.

The late Joop Swart joined the rescue organization in 1966, when WPPH was dying. From then on, until his death on March 8, 1994, Swat made great contributions to the development of WPP in the past 30 years, while serving as a judge, judge chairman, foundation chairman and honorary chairman after 199 1. 199 1 year, Harry Glenn succeeded swat as the chairman of WPP foundation.

The scale of "Lotus Competition" has been expanding year by year in 40 years' practice. From the first competition, only 42 photographers from 1 1 countries participated in nearly 200 photos, to the 38th competition 1995, 2997 photographers from 97 countries and regions participated in 29885 photos. The types of photos in the competition have developed from the early single black-and-white film to more than 63% of color films, and the trend of color positive films is increasing. The competition events developed from several individual events in the early days to eight categories 16 events in the early 1980s.

Thanks to the sponsorship of KLM, Kodak and Canon, the foundation has sufficient funds to set up high bonuses. The first prize of "Holland Race" 15000 Netherlands guilders, as well as the award ceremony and the round-trip air tickets for accommodation and reception in the Netherlands. In addition, it also provides conditions for the author who won the first prize to hold his own news film festival. The first prize of each award is 2500 Netherlands guilders, and there is also a round-trip air ticket to Amsterdam for the award ceremony and accommodation and reception during the period in the Netherlands. In order to cultivate young people's interest and appreciation of news photography, a children's selection group was established from 1986. A children's jury composed of 9 children aged 1 1- 13 from all over the world, the adult jury selected excellent photos and awarded the winning works of the world photojournalism children's award. This award is the same as the first prize.

Every year in the middle and late April, after the award ceremony of that year's competition is held in Amsterdam, the exhibition of winning works and some selected works is opened at the same time. After that, the exhibition of the same content will be exhibited in more than 70 cities in nearly 40 countries and regions. Over the past 30 years, the audience of WPP Film Festival has reached more than1million people all over the world. Synchronize with the film festival and publish the yearbook of winning and selected works every year. Exquisitely printed black-and-white and color photos, with accurate and detailed news picture descriptions and detailed background information, so each WPP Yearbook can be regarded as an image of the world chronicle.

In addition to holding competitions, the foundation also holds photojournalism seminars.

In order to widely improve the photojournalism level of young photographers, the Foundation held the WPP master class for the first time in 1994. The first master workshop invited famous photo editors and award-winning photographers who had served as the chairman or members of WPP competition as "mentors" to teach 10 outstanding photographers under the age of 30 selected from various countries and comment on their photos. Finally, choose the best works from their works for exhibition and observation. The Foundation wants to organize such a master workshop once a year so that young photographers all over the world can be nominated. Huang Wen, a 29-year-old female editor of the photography department of Xinhua News Agency, 1995 was selected as the WPP master workshop.

WPP competition rules are basically stable, but there have been several major changes and adjustments in the practice of nearly 40 years. In terms of award setting, 1979, in order to commemorate the birthday of oskar barnack, the inventor of Lycra camera100th anniversary, Leeds Photographic Equipment Company added a special award "oskar barnack Prize". The award goes to the author of the best series of photos, 10000 guilders, and a round-trip ticket to Amsterdam. This award was once the highest award. 1990, the first prize was adjusted from 5000 guilders to 15000 guilders. Following the investment of 1.986 USD, the Hungarian Tourism Board continues to invest 2,500 Dutch guilders every year to add a special prize "Budapest Prize".

With the change of political situation in Eastern Europe, the above two special prizes-"oskar barnack Prize" and "Budapest Prize" were officially cancelled in the competition of 1994. However, the first prize of each competition without funds increased by 2500 guilders and 1993 round-trip air tickets, accommodation and reception for the 36th competition. In this way, the awards will be greatly broadened. In terms of competition events, 1982 has doubled than before, and a classification model of eight categories 16 has been established. 1986 "science and technology and art" was separated into nine categories 18. 199 1 canceled the category of "happy events" and changed it into eight categories 16. The category of "special stories" was renamed as "general news". In addition to some changes in the rules of the competition, the design of the invitation letter for soliciting contributions issued by the Foundation has changed greatly from 1993-from narrow to wide. No matter how many changes have been made in content and form, the deadline of WPP competition remains unchanged, which is 65438+ 10/3.
