It is the first time to tell the inheritance and development of Buddhism in China for more than 2,000 years by documentary. The most classic Buddhist holy land in history, the eminent monks and great virtues that profoundly influenced China's history and culture, and the wonderful moments that still shocked us thousands of years later are all presented in this documentary. This film is a comprehensive review and display of this great course. After Buddhism was introduced to China in the Eastern Han Dynasty 2000 years ago, it not only made up for the lack of Confucian ultimate concern for human beings, but also collided and merged with China local culture. As for rooting, it eventually became one of the three cultural cornerstones supporting the whole Chinese nation.
The large-scale high-definition TV documentary "Millennium Bodhi Road" will go deep into the famous temples in China and neighboring countries, explore the lofty aspirations of eminent monks in past dynasties to practice and spread Buddhism, take historical humanities as the aesthetic orientation, and avoid the interpretation and exploration of teachings, so as to sort out a historical context of the inheritance and development of Buddhism in China in 2000 and restore the original clear image of Buddhism in China. In the eighth year of Yongping, in 65 AD, ancient Indian monks took photos of Morton and Zhu Falan crossing the Pamirs on foot, and rode white horses carrying scriptures and Buddha statues to Luoyang, the glorious capital of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Since then, the voice of wisdom of an Indian sage named "Buddha" has echoed in the vast land of China for 2000 years. From remote to real, from vague to deafening.
Today, we see the coexistence of Buddhism in the three major language families of Han, Tibetan and Pali in China. We see more and more people talking about Buddhism, and we see the incense of famous Buddhist mountains burning day by day. On the other hand, due to historical reasons, behind the prosperity of this school, people actually have more and more misunderstandings about Buddhism and are farther and farther away from the wisdom of the Buddha.
So why did Buddhism choose China? What kind of collision and integration have Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism had? How many legendary chapters have been written by eminent monks in past dynasties? What kind of spiritual home has Buddhism built for everyone in China?
Zhao Puchu, former chairman of the late Chinese Buddhist Association, once wrote: "The development of human culture is a continuous process, and traditional culture and modern culture cannot be completely cut off. We should absorb all the valuable essence of traditional culture to enrich and develop the new socialist national culture. The traditional culture of China also includes Buddhist culture. "
It is based on this understanding, on the grand desire to comprehensively sort out the history of Buddhism in China, and on the realistic needs of building a harmonious society. After five years of careful preparation, we were finally allowed to enter every important Buddhist site in China, and recorded the solemn Buddha statues, the practice spots everywhere, the long-standing pile of scriptures, the monks and virtues left in history with our lens.
This is a rare opportunity and an unprecedented production. With the strong support of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture of China, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the National Tourism Administration and National Cultural Heritage Administration, and under the strict control of a group of domestic Buddhist experts and scholars such as Lou Yulie, Wen Jinyu, Li Yinglai and Chen Hongxing, we have every reason to believe that "Millennium Bodhi Road" will lead each and every one of us while showing the charm of Buddhism in China. "Millennium Bodhi Road" will outline the historical track of the spread and development of Buddhism in China since 2000 with the clues of the rise and fall of temples, the fate of characters and the inheritance of different Buddhist sects. Its main content involves 32 representative temples and related eminent monks in the Buddhist history of China.
