What kind of woodcarving can represent China or Xiamen?

Mr. Qiu Sheng, a folk artist, presented a group of woodcarving works to Xiamen Olympic Museum for collection. This group of woodcarving works named "Harmonious Journey" takes the torch relay as the theme, combines elements such as the Olympic Games and China, and consists of two works: "Olympic Spirit" and "Passion".

The "Olympic spirit" is carved from ancient camphor wood for more than 300 years. The main body is a sailing boat braving the wind and waves, carrying the Olympic flame and the five-star red flag, representing the Olympic flame across five continents. The author ingeniously combines the Olympic torch with the China watch representing the ancient culture of China, and connects the torch with the five-star red flag with the five Olympic rings. On the other hand, the slogan "One World, One Dream" of the Beijing Olympic Games is engraved on the sail, the English loong in the shape of "Olympic Spirit" and "2008" is engraved on the hull, and the words "Xiangyun" and "Centennial Dream" are engraved on the side.

Another work, Passion, is carved in mahogany. The main body is the Olympic torch with both hands clenched, and an egret representing Xiamen flies beside the torch. The words "holding the Olympic flame", "burning the dream of peace" and "passion" are engraved on the base.

Mr. Qiu's works are commendable in terms of materials, techniques and scarcity. "The ancient camphor wood itself is very precious, and the carving process is also very fine. More importantly, this group of works expresses the meaning of global integration and harmonious Olympics. Expressing support for the Olympics is a unique artistic means for artists, and it will be passed down as the actual carrier of the Olympic spirit. "
