Anning City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, is located on the eastern edge of the Central Yunnan Plateau, with a total area of ??1,313 square kilometers. Anning is 32 kilometers away from Kunming. It is an important transportation town connecting Kunming to 8 prefectures in western Yunnan and directly connected to Myanmar via Wanding. The city is connected to Xishan District in the northeast, Jinning District in the southeast, and Yimen and Lufeng County in the west.

On April 20, 1950, the Anning County People's Government was established. In October 1956, Anning County was renamed Anning District of Kunming City. In September 1959, it was renamed Anning. On October 13, 1995, with the approval of the State Council, Anning County was abolished and county-level Anning City was established. Anning City was directly under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province and managed by Kunming City.
