Cimetière du Montparnasse is one of the three major cemeteries in Paris, alongside Cimetière du Père-Lachaise and Cimetière de Montmartre. The original cemetery in Montparnasse was Le Cimetière du Sud. After it was closed for sanitary reasons in 1786, the cemetery was rebuilt on three expropriated farms in 1824.
The Montparnasse Cemetery is the burial place of many French literary and artistic intellectual elites. The famous realist writer Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), mathematician Jules Henri Poincaré (1854-1912), automobile engineer Citroen (André Citro?n, 1878–1935), existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) and his wife Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986), Durr, one of the founders of sociology Mile Durkheim (1858-1917), New Wave director and writer Marguerite Donnadieu (known as Marguerite Duras, 1914-1996), Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), author of "Waiting for Godot" , Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), the creator of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and others are buried here. The famous Chinese female painter and sculptor Pan Yulin (1895-1977) is also buried here. It is also a place to commemorate the Paris policemen and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
