A must-go place for a one-day trip to Gaoping
Recommended places that must be visited during a one-day trip to Gaoping: 1. Chongming Temple, a masterpiece in the history of Chinese architecture; 2. Xianweng Temple, a famous Taoist temple; 3. Yangtoushan Grottoes, a group of grottoes in the Northern Wei Dynasty .
1. Chongming Temple. It is located at the east foot of Shengfo Mountain, Gaoping City, Shanxi Province. Formerly known as Langgu Temple, the existing courtyard has two entrances, consisting of the mountain gate, the central Buddhist hall, the back hall and the side hall. The central Buddhist hall in the temple, built in the Northern Song Dynasty, is the earliest existing wooden Xieshan style building in the Song Dynasty. A small three-room building actually uses seven bungalows. The main hall is built on rectangular steps. On the six rafters in the hall, the craftsmen creatively adopted the method of using small pieces of wood in large quantities, that is, in order to save wood, two broken pieces of wood were used to splice them together. The craftsmen inherited the construction techniques of the Tang Dynasty and made new breakthroughs in techniques. With its elegant and handsome shape and exquisite and bold craftsmanship, Chongming Temple has become a precious example of the transition between Tang Dynasty architecture and Song Dynasty architecture in my country. It can be called a masterpiece in the history of Chinese architecture.
2. Xianweng Temple. Located in Bofang Village, Sizhuang Town, Gaoping City. It is a famous local Taoist temple. The year of its founding is unknown, but it was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. The Xianweng Hall in the temple is dedicated to Zhang Guolao. There are huge murals on the wall, which are very precious. The architectural style of the Yuan Dynasty includes the east and west walls and murals. The composition and coloring also have the style of the Yuan Dynasty. They have been repaired and repainted by later generations. There is a special corridor built in front of the Xianweng Hall, and there is a very small bridge in the middle. It is said that it is used to measure steps. It takes only 5 steps to walk to the Xiandian Hall.
3. Sheephead Mountain Grottoes. A group of grottoes excavated in the Northern Wei Dynasty. Located at the southern foot of Yangtou Mountain in Gaoping City. There is a stone sheep lying prone on the top of the mountain. The image is lifelike, which may be the origin of the name Sheep Head Mountain. The stone sheep is carrying a square stone pillar with Buddhist niches carved on all sides. On the mountainside in this area, there are large and small grottoes scattered along the mountain. There are 6 large-scale grottoes that have been protected by fences. The grottoes were excavated in the Northern Wei Dynasty. They have simple shapes and simple techniques and are very rare. They are a key cultural relics protection unit in the country.
