What are some good itineraries and tips for traveling to Shanxi?

The question is which city in eastern Shanxi are you from, so Yuncheng Linfen (Jincheng) is the starting point. Not much difference. The suggestions are as follows:

Day 1: Yuncheng Linfen-Hukou Waterfall-Pingyao Ancient City is about 150 kilometers (Jincheng may be farther). Drive 270 kilometers directly to Pingyao Ancient City, stay in the ancient city and enjoy the night view.

The next day: Pingyao Ancient City - Yungang Grottoes (Datong), 390 kilometers, 4.40 hours' drive. Get up in the morning and visit Pingyao Ancient City, drive to Yungang Grottoes in the afternoon, and stay at a hotel in Datong or Yungang Grottoes in the evening.

Day 3: Datong-Hengshan, 80 kilometers. Today we will visit Yungang Grottoes, Nine Dragons Wall, and Datong surroundings, and go directly to Hunyuan or Datong in the evening.

Day 4: Hengshan-Wutai Mountain, 166 kilometers long. The altitude of Hengshan Mountain is not high and the scenery is average. You can go back and forth in one day. Today we will climb Mount Heng in Beiyue and descend Mount Wutai in the afternoon. It’s better to live in the mountains.

Day 5: Wutai Mountain-Taiyuan 185km, driving time 2h50 hours. If you stayed in the mountains last night, you can swim through Wutai Mountain today and go down to Taiyuan in the afternoon. You can also stay one more night and be in Taiyuan tomorrow morning.

Day 6: Taiyuan - go home. Get up today and continue to visit Jinci Temple and Qiaotaiyuan's courtyard house. Finally, drive home. The kilometers are not that many either.
