Dr. Goh Keng Swee was originally from Fujian and was born on October 6, 1918 in Malacca, Malaysia. When he was educated at Raffles College established by the British colonial government in Singapore in his early years, he was keen on economics. After the end of World War II, he obtained a doctorate in the UK. With the ideal of helping Singaporeans escape poverty, Dr Goh Keng Swee decided to enter politics in 1959. He quit his job in civil service, initiated the founding of the People's Action Party with Cabinet Minister Lee Kuan Yew, former Deputy Prime Minister S. Rajaratnam and Toh Chin Chye, and participated in the 1959 national election. At that time, he was running for a small constituency in the center of Chinatown, then called "Chinatown District". Although it was his first campaign, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Chinatown District with an overwhelming vote. Dr. Goh Keng Swee won the trust of Lee Kuan Yew, the then Prime Minister of Singapore. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew made outstanding economic achievements, turning Singapore into an Asian dragon and a pearl in Southeast Asia in just over 20 years. In 1959, when Singapore encountered serious economic difficulties, Dr. Goh Keng Swee was appointed as the Minister of Finance at the time of the country's crisis, responsible for comprehensive planning of Singapore's economy. He planned and promoted Singapore's industrialization, expanded Singapore's export trade, vigorously developed tourism and the financial industry, and guided the formulation of a series of Singapore's monetary policies, which enabled Singapore's economic development to continuously gain new impetus and become one of the world's financial centers. The educational reform led by Dr. Goh Keng Swee in Singapore has also achieved great results and played a major role in Singapore's modernization process. In 1979, after Dr. Goh Keng Swee concurrently served as the Minister of Education, he proposed an education reform plan suitable for Singapore's national conditions, transforming basic education from an elimination type to a compulsory type, allowing students with different abilities to have access to education. The biggest feature of this reform plan also includes the implementation of a streaming system in primary and secondary schools. Dr. Goh Keng Swee served as Minister of Defense to establish Singapore's military, defend the independence and sovereignty of the newly born Republic of Korea, and build a modern national defense system. The compulsory national service system implemented in our country is also attributed to Dr. Goh Keng Swee. In 1984, Dr. Goh Keng Swee resigned from the cabinet and retired from politics in the same year. After retiring from politics, Dr. Goh Keng Swee also served as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Chairman of the Monetary Board and Vice Chairman of the Government Investment Corporation. In recent years, he has lived a low-key life in seclusion. Dr. Wu's relationship with my country In 1978, when Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore, Deng Xiaoping was shocked by Singapore's economic development. The development of Jurong Industrial Zone aroused strong interest from Deng Xiaoping. He hoped that the founder of the industrial zone and Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Singapore's economy, Goh Keng Swee, would visit China and make suggestions on the direction of China's economic development. At the invitation of Deng Xiaoping, Wu Qingrui visited China for the first time in 1979. During the meeting, Deng Xiaoping expressed the hope that he would accept an appointment as an economic adviser to the State Council of China after retiring. After Dr. Goh Keng Swee resigned as Deputy Prime Minister, he gladly accepted the invitation of the Chinese government to serve as economic advisor and tourism advisor to China Coastal Development Zone (1985 to 1990). Wu Qingrui has served as a consultant to the Chinese government for nearly six years. Deng Xiaoping met with him every year and listened to his reports and suggestions in detail. Vice Premier Gu Mu, who is in charge of economic work, had more frequent contacts with him. The hiring of foreigners as consultants to the central government was also an innovative move in the history of New China, showing that Deng Xiaoping cherished Singapore's successful experience.
