In March 1972, the Municipal Construction Department of Pingwugong District, Henan Province was established. In December 1973, the Wuyang Work District Office of the Henan Provincial Revolutionary Committee was established, and the six communes in the southern part of Wuyang County were designated as its jurisdiction.
In May 1977, the Wuyang Industrial District Office of the Henan Provincial Revolutionary Committee was abolished and placed under Pingdingshan City. In November of the same year, Wugang District of Pingdingshan City was established, named after Wuyang Iron and Steel Company, the largest local enterprise.
