The origin of Luyi County’s name

In ancient times, Luyi was called "ku" (hu), "Zhenyuan", "Guyang", "Xianyuan", "Weizhen", etc. In history, three emperors issued edicts to change the name of Luyi County. Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty issued an edict to change the name of the county to Zhenyuan in the first year of Qianfeng (666), making Luyi the birthplace of truth (Taoist thought). Wu Zetian proclaimed herself the emperor and respected Li Mu as the Xiantian Empress Dowager. In the first year of Zaichu (689), she issued an edict to change Zhenyuan to Immortal Source, which meant that Laozi was the one who attained Taoism and became an immortal, and the place where Laozi was born was the source of immortality. After Song Zhenzong paid a visit to Luyi, he issued an edict to change the name of the county to Wei Zhen to show that he defended the supreme status of Lao Tzu and his thoughts (truth) more than other dynasties. In the 18th year of the founding of the Sui Dynasty, the neighboring Wuping County had its name changed to Luyi County because "there were many elk and deer were often heard singing". "Xu Zhi" says: "In the early Yuan Dynasty, we avoided the water and moved eastward. Today's place merged with Wei Zhen and was still called Lu Yi, but the old Lu Yi was abandoned." The divisional setting is very clear: after the merger of Wei Zhen and Lu Yi counties, the county name was still used "Luyi", the administrative office was moved to "Weizhen". Since the Yuan Dynasty, the county name has been used to this day.

Luyi, a county directly under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, was known as Minglu, Zhenyuan, Kuxian, Guyang and Xianyuan in ancient times. It is located at the junction of Henan and Anhui in the east of Henan Province. It borders Bozhou City, Anhui Province to the east, Huaiyang County to the west, Zhecheng County to the north, and Dancheng County to the south. Luyi is the hometown of Laozi, the founder of Taoism. In November 2011, after an on-site inspection and demonstration by experts organized by the China Folk Literature and Artists Association, it was reported to the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles for approval and filed with the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Luyi County in Henan Province was named "The Hometown of Chinese Laozi Culture" and the "Chinese Laozi Cultural Research Center" was established.
