The old history of Zigong

Zigong has a history of two thousand years of salt industry and 73 years of city founding. In 1939, the National Government approved the establishment of Zigong City. It is one of the earliest provincial cities and industrial towns in Sichuan Province and the earliest in China. One of the 23 incorporated cities.

Dinosaurs, well salt and lantern festivals are known as the "Big Three" of Zigong; Gong fans, tie-dyeing and paper-cutting are known as the "Three Small" of Zigong, known as the "Millennium Salt City" and "The City of Dinosaurs". It is famous both at home and abroad for its reputations as "Hometown of Nanguo", "Light City of Nanguo" and "Jiang Jie's Hometown".

The origin of Zigong:

Zigong is named after two ancient salt wells, "Artesian Well" and "Gongjing".

According to historical records, Zigong built towns, counties, and cities because of salt. Before the city was founded, it belonged to Rong County and Fushun County. In ancient times, the eastern and western parts of Sichuan belonged to Ba and Shu, Rong County belonged to Shu, and Fushun belonged to Ba. In the second year of Tianhe (AD 567), Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, the Fushi Salt Well and its surrounding areas in the northern part of Jiangyang County were analyzed and Luoyuan County and Fushi County (named after the well) were established. This was the beginning of the establishment of the county in the Fushun border area. At the same time, in Jiangongjing Town in the eastern part of Rongxian County (because there is a famous salt well called Dagongjing nearby, so the town was named after the well) was the first administrative unit of Rongxian County.

Later, it went through changes in dynasties. During the Anti-Japanese War, due to the occupation of the coastal areas, Sichuan salt was used to supply Chu, and the Furong salt field was very important in ensuring military supplies and civilian food and supporting the frontline war of resistance. In order to overcome the shortcomings of the two counties' long-term separation of salt fields and accelerate the development of the salt industry, the 28th Republic of China was established. In August 1939, with the approval of the Sichuan Provincial Government, the main salt-producing areas closely connected with Fushun and Rong counties were designated as a new city with an area of ??160.9 square kilometers. The city was named Zigong City after the combination of Ziliujing and Gongjing. On December 5, 1949, Zigong was peacefully liberated. With the development of economy and society, the administrative district was adjusted several times. In April 1978, Rong County was reorganized. It was placed under the jurisdiction of Zigong City. In March 1983, Fushun County was placed under the jurisdiction of Zigong.
