Custer State Park has spectacular geological structures and the largest bison herd in the country, with nearly 1,500 bison roaming the park. South Dakota is part of the Central Plains, rising slowly toward the Rocky Mountains. The southern state has the Missouri River as its centerline, dividing two very different regions. The Missouri River flows south through the center of the southern state, then turns southeast and forms the state border with Nebraska. On the east bank of the Missouri River, the ground was leveled by ancient glaciers, leaving hills and 120 small lakes in the northeast. The west bank of the Missouri River is covered with grassland, and there are rows of solitary mountains and black hills (Black Hills) in the northwest of the state and the very spectacular Badlands in the south.
