It is also often called "President Mountain National Park".

Heigang suddenly rises up on hundreds of miles of open plains. It looks very out of place. Heigang is a small mountain range 50 miles wide and 120 miles long. The average height is higher than that of the nearby plains. At 4,000 feet and 7,242 feet high, Harney Peak is the highest mountain east of the Rocky Mountains. The Missouri River forms a series of impounded lakes in a very narrow valley, hence the name Great Lakes of South Dakota. Francis Case, Lewis and Clark, Oahe and Sharpe provide the South State's valuable power and irrigation resources, as well as excellent water recreation facilities. Custer State Park has spectacular geological structures and the largest bison herd in the country, with nearly 1,500 bison roaming the park. South Dakota is part of the Central Plains, rising slowly toward the Rocky Mountains. The southern state has the Missouri River as its centerline, dividing two very different regions. The Missouri River flows south through the center of the southern state, then turns southeast and forms the state border with Nebraska. On the east bank of the Missouri River, the ground was leveled by ancient glaciers, leaving hills and 120 small lakes in the northeast. The west bank of the Missouri River is covered with grassland, and there are rows of solitary mountains and black hills (Black Hills) in the northwest of the state and the very spectacular Badlands in the south.

Black Ridge suddenly rises up on hundreds of miles of open plains, looking very out of place. Black Ridge is a small mountain range 50 miles wide and 120 miles long, with an average height higher than that of the nearby plains. At 4,000 feet and 7,242 feet tall, Harney Peak is the tallest mountain east of the Rocky Mountains. Black Ridge is surrounded by Mount Rosemoor National Monument.
