Extended information
The saying of the five mountains first appeared in "Zhou Li·Chun Guan·Dazong Bo": "Blood sacrifices are used to worship the country, the five sacrifices, and the five mountains." "Zhou Li" was written in In the late Warring States period, Confucianism was formed by integrating Taoism, Dharma, Yin and Yang and other schools of thought. Therefore, we believe that the idea of ??the Five Mountains is a mountain worship formed by combining the four gods from the Xia and Shang dynasties and the concept of the five elements in the early Warring States Period.
The Five Sacred Mountains were conferred by the emperors in the feudal era. "Anthology of Historical Records" records: "The sky is too high to be reached, so we set up a memorial ceremony for it on Mount Tai in order to be close to the gods." In order to "repay heaven for their merits", emperors often regarded majestic and steep mountains as auspiciousness, and placed statues on the top of the peak. An altar was set up to offer sacrifices and a Zen ceremony was held.
Feng Chan’s theory is estimated to have originated from the Spring and Autumn Period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and the Warring States Period. The first person to hold a large-scale Zen ceremony was Qin Shihuang. The only place where Qin Shihuang personally offered sacrifices was Mount Tai. In the Tang Dynasty and Wu Zhou Emperor Wu Zetian, the activities of enshrining Zen were in Songshan Mountain in the Central Plains. After the history of feudal emperors and Zen, the status of the Five Mountains has become higher.
