Officially named Shanghai Theater Academy in 1956, it is affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and is a national key art school. In June 2002, the former School of Performing Arts of Shanghai Normal University was merged, and Shanghai Opera School and Shanghai Dance School became affiliated schools of the school.

Shanghai Theater Academy, formerly the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School, was founded on December 1, 1945. In October 1949, Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School was renamed Shanghai Municipal Drama College. In 1952, colleges and universities across the country implemented departmental adjustments. The Drama Department of the Art Department of Shandong University and the Drama Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School were merged and formally established. It was renamed the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Drama (an independent school and independent organization).
