The Mengshan Giant Buddha is located about 20 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan City. It is a 63-meter-high cliff carved stone Buddha excavated by Emperor Gaoyang of the Northern Qi Dynasty in the second year of Tianbao (551). It is also called the Xishan Giant Buddha. The temple buried at its feet was once the early dojo of the Pure Land Sect of Buddhism. The restoration project started in 2006 and was reopened to the world in May 2008.
