When traveling, do you communicate with others in your native dialect? Or speak Mandarin?
Traveling. I can communicate with people in Mandarin.
Because. Although my hometown is Shanghai. Because I grew up in Luoyang. I am used to communicating with people in Mandarin.
Mandarin is the common language of the modern Han nation. It is also the common language of all ethnic groups in the country. so. I always speak in Mandarin.
I can also speak Shanghainese. However, due to many years of living abroad. Already, speaking Shanghainese is no longer standard. If I speak in Shanghainese, my Shanghainese would have a southern accent and a northern accent. Very unpleasant.
So, when I am traveling or communicating with colleagues. I can all communicate in Mandarin.
People from all over China will use Mandarin to communicate when they meet people with different dialects, but if they meet people from Baiyue who speak Baihua, they will ignore whether you understand or not and insist on They only use Baiyue dialect, but the Internet also insists on publishing Baiyue script that imitates Chinese characters and borrows the sounds of Chinese characters, pretending that I am superior to you, because there was a group of "water-flowing firewood" who helped the Mongols and Manchus. The Han people were favored by the Mongols and Manchus, and lived a good life on the shore. Now they think that their Baiyue dialect is the best in the world. Back when the foreigners came to Lingnan and Shuihuichaiguoshan Yaojiang Yaoshui people had a fierce fight with each other. The Baihua Xianshui girl actually taught the foreigners to speak a hundred words. That skill was really amazing! Foreigners translate Hong Kong into (Kang Hong Kang Kong), which is a literal translation of "European and American foreigners" from the spoken language of Jiang Yao Xianshuimei Shui Shui Bai Hua (the originator of Cantonese). Now Bai Hua, a rural water town in the Pearl River Delta, did not enter the city because he was the last to land. Through evolution, the accent of pronouncing Hong Kong as (Kang Hong Kang Kong) is still preserved.
I can use Mandarin. Regardless of whether the other party can understand Wuhan dialect, I usually use Mandarin, but there are exceptions.
Maybe it’s because I’m used to talking about Wuhan. Once I went to Nanjing and when I was shopping for something to eat, I directly said what I wanted without noticing. It seemed that I had forgotten that I was in a foreign country.
When I reacted, the boss had already handed me the food I needed. Surprised, I mentioned this to someone, and he smiled and said, in fact, this is normal. Nanjing is a big city with so many tourists traveling from north to south. Let alone Wuhan dialect, regardless of whether it is Northeast or Guangdong. In their eyes, they can generally understand it.
He said that the most difficult thing to understand was Jiang Xi’s babbling. Even after staying there for two years, he could not understand everything.
My previous boss was from Zhejiang. Every time they talked in private, they always used their local dialect, which really made the sound of floating in the clouds. But when he talks to us, he still uses Mandarin.
Since they are from Nanjing, Jiangsu and Zhejiang dialects are not a problem for them. Maybe Jiangsu and Zhejiang are the ones who understand the most dialects!
I don’t like to use Wuhan dialect when I’m abroad. Firstly, Wuhan dialect is really like an argument, so even if the other party can understand it, I don’t want others to misunderstand it. Also, if I am recognized as a local, It will be much safer, and ordinary bad guys will not dare to attack locals.
When I travel in the south, I will be misunderstood as a local. In the north, I really can’t hide it and it is easy for others to see through. They said my accent was too southern and my skin was moister than that of northerners. This may be one of the reasons why I like the South. I don’t have a sense of belonging in the North, and I look like an outsider at first glance.
I suggest you use Mandarin when traveling. Even if there are many people together, Mandarin can easily bring you closer to the locals. I always remember the young lady in the Confucius Temple in Nanjing who spoke softly. It almost melts people.
