Construction History of Yumenkou Yellow River Bridge

The Yumenkou Yellow River Cable Bridge officially started construction in March 1949. The first phase of the project involves manufacturing components and digging the bridge foundation. The troops were divided into two groups and carried out simultaneously. The second phase of the project is to erect the iron cables, which is the most arduous stage of the entire project. In early September, the project entered the third stage of laying and reinforcement. In order to test the bridge in time for the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on October 1, workers worked day and night to build guardrails with barbed wire at the bottom and both sides of the bridge, and to lay the bridge deck, which was fixed to the iron cables with iron wires. At the end of September, the project was basically completed. People on both sides of the Qin and Jin Dynasties rushed to tell each other, and Minsheng Pu Opera Troupe (namely Wang Xiulan Pu Opera Troupe) was invited to perform. In the early morning of October 1, the crowd participating in the bridge trial ceremony came to both sides of the ferry early in the morning, beating gongs and drums. But I never expected that there would be a strong wind at night, and all the bridge planks would be overturned and thrown into the river, leaving only a piece of it. The bridge builders were not discouraged, learned from the failure and started a new reinforcement project. In the spring of 1950, the Yumenkou Iron Cable Bridge was completed. A new type of bridge that had never been seen in ancient times spanned Yumen, connecting the two provinces of Qin and Jin. After the chain bridge was officially put into use, thousands of people pass through it every day, and up to 800 tons of cargo can be transported. There has never been a major accident. From its completion in 1950 to the opening of the new highway bridge in 1975, it played an immeasurable role in socialist construction in the 25 years. In 1975, the bridge construction team of the Ministry of Railways built a modern flexible steel suspension highway bridge and a steel truss railway bridge on the old foundation of the cable bridge. In order to keep it as a commemoration, the iron cable bridge, railway bridge and highway bridge span Yumen side by side for people to watch. The Yumenkou Iron Cable Bridge, highway bridge and railway bridge connect the two provinces of Qin and Shanxi. The three bridges span the Yellow River side by side, like three rainbows in the sky, adding to the extraordinary momentum of Longmen.

The Yumenkou Yellow River Cable Bridge was invested and built by the state in 1949, with a total length of 150 meters, a width of 1.5 meters, and wooden piles. The iron wire and steel rope railings and the bridge deck are laid with wooden boards, which are laid out early every day and dismantled every evening. They need to be dismantled every time there is strong wind. After the bridge deck is laid, it can be used by pedestrians and small people and animal-drawn vehicles. It will be discontinued after the highway bridge is completed.

Yumoumen Yellow River Highway Bridge

Yumoumen Yellow River Highway Bridge includes one suspension bridge and one double-curved arch bridge. Construction started in August 1972 and was completed in July 1973. The suspension bridge spans between the isolated island in the Yellow River and the Shanxi Bank; the double-curved arch bridge is located between the isolated island in the river and the Shaanxi Bank. Both bridges were designed and constructed by the Bridge Engineering Bureau of the Ministry of Transport. Load steam - 13, hanging - 60. The suspension bridge is a single-span single-chain suspension structure. The distance between towers is 144 meters, the width of the carriageway is 7 meters, the width of the sidewalks on both sides is 1 meter, the ratio of span to span is 1:9, the height of the steel tower is 17.93 meters, and the distance between stiffening truss supports 140 meters, the truss is 3.5 meters high and 9.5 meters wide. There are 19 booms on both sides of the steel truss suspended from the main cables (each main cable is composed of 27 and 42 steel wire ropes). The ground anchors on both sides of the bank adopt reinforced concrete structures, and the cable saddles, cable clamps and anchor heads are all made of cast steel. The bridge abutments on both sides are placed on rocks. The single-hole double-curved arch bridge has a net span of 54 meters, the sidewalks on both sides are 1 meter wide, and the span-to-span ratio is 1:10. The whole bridge is equipped with 6 rectangular variable deck reinforced concrete arch ribs. The thickness of the vault is 1.24 meters. The foot thickness is 1.44 meters and the bridge deck is flat. Since May 9, 1974, it has been handed over to the Weinan Area Highway General Section to be responsible for maintenance and management.

Yumoumen Yellow River Railway Bridge

Yumoumen Yellow River Railway Bridge is a bottom-bearing steel truss simply supported beam with a single span. The Shaanxi side of the bridge is a continuous top-bearing prestressed reinforced concrete simply supported girder bridge with more than ten holes. When the Yellow River water flow is usually small, there is no water under the bridge. There is also a tunnel at the Shaanxi end of the bridge, which is shorter. Yumenkou Railway Bridge was built from December 1971 to April 1972, with a total weight of 2,100 tons. Under the conditions at that time, the large scale of the project, the high technical difficulty and the short construction time were a feat in the history of transportation.
