Real shots of Macau’s century-old streets, which were once bustling and bustling, are now calm, and many century-old shops were found
Mango Travel Diary: There is an old street in Macau that used to be very lively and prosperous, with many shops and a constant flow of pedestrians. Nowadays, it is a bit deserted with fewer tourists, which is sad.
This old street is called October 5th Street, or October 5th Street for short. It is located on the Macau Peninsula and is also called Simeng Street because there used to be a wharf here called Simeng Pier. It is said that October 5th Street The street used to be a bay shoal, but was later reclaimed and turned into an inland street.
Why is it called October 5th Street? It is said that the Macao-Portuguese government renamed it October 5th Street in order to commemorate the National Day when Portugal overthrew the monarchy and established the Republic of Korea on October 5, 1910. The locals simply called it October 5th Street. There are many old people. Macau people call it Simeng Street.
Due to its proximity to the Inner Harbor Terminal and convenient water and land transportation, October 5th Street once became one of the most prosperous and lively streets in Macao. There are many shops and stalls selling vegetables, rice, fruits, and daily necessities. There is a constant flow of pedestrians. It is said that the goods sold here are not only complete in style, but also at low prices. Therefore, many residents of Macau and neighboring areas of Macau come to shop, which is very lively.
Unfortunately, with the passage of time, many shops have closed down and the number of pedestrians has gradually decreased, which is a pity. However, although the bustle of Fifth Street in October is no longer there, it still carries the memories of many old Macao people, and many old Macao people still come here to look for memories.
The 2000 Hong Kong hit drama "Moonlight on the Fifth of October" ("Macau Street") was filmed here. Today, there are still many century-old shops hidden on October 5th Street. Our friends in Macau also took us to visit a few.
The photo is of a century-old tea shop. The owners are a father and son. The father is over 80 years old but still energetic. It is said that their family is the largest tea merchant in Macau. In this century-old shop on the old street, listening to the old people telling the legends of their times is like going back to that turbulent era.
This is the second old shop we visited, Pinfang Bakery. There is a "gold letter" signboard at the door when it opened. It has been more than 50 years ago. The owners are a couple, many old Macau people. Everyone comes to their house to buy cakes and snacks. It is said that Gree Chairman Dong Mingzhu has also been here. The hostess said that today's young people don't like to inherit their father's business, so many old stores are in a state of having no successors. It is not easy to maintain an old store.
The third one is a drugstore. Although its appearance is not as grand as the big pharmacies now, its reputation is very good. It is said that it has been there for more than 100 years. The current owner is the third generation and will personally inspect all the medicinal materials. . There was also a cat in the store. When he saw us, he came up to me and meowed, "Meow, meow, meow." I instantly felt that this was a drugstore with smoke and fire.
The fourth restaurant is a barbecue restaurant called Fenji Roast Meat. It looks very ordinary and will be ignored if you are not careful. However, according to my Macau friends, this is the best restaurant in Macau. Before the epidemic, we often had to wait in line for two hours at our barbecued pork shop, and it was not always possible to buy it. The supply was limited every day. The owners were a couple who had opened the shop for more than 50 years and only focused on making barbecued pork. Although the business was very good, they had never opened a branch. Their philosophy is that their energy is limited, and the quality of barbecue will drop when they open a branch. Therefore, their business has always been very good, and their customers are all local Macau people.
October 5th Street was once one of the most prosperous and lively streets in Macau. Today, there are still many century-old shops. If you like history and culture, you might as well take a walk here when you come to Macau.
