Jianchuan Ancient City is located in the west of Yunnan Province, north of Dali Prefecture, Heqing County in the east, Eryuan County in the south, Lijiang County in Lijiang Prefecture in the north, Yunlong County and Lanping County in Nujiang Prefecture in the west, between 26 20' and 26 53' north latitude and 9915'-kloc-0/0005' east longitude. The county is characterized by rolling hills and criss-crossing rivers, high in the northwest and low in the southeast, with a total land area of 2,250 square kilometers, of which the dam area is 579.42 square kilometers, the mountainous area is 1 670.58 square kilometers, the total water resources is 9 1 100 million cubic meters, the existing cultivated land is 200,600 mu, and the annual average precipitation is 760 mm/kl. The county governs Jinhua Town and other six towns and three townships, and the county seat is located in Jinhua Town.

There are many cultural relics and tourist attractions in Jianchuan, among which Shi Zhongshan Grottoes are of great historical value, so they were announced by the State Council as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 196 1. Shaxi Sideng Street, the only surviving market on the ancient tea-horse road, was selected into the World Memorial Building Foundation 10 1 World Endangered Heritage List in 2002, and was named AA-level tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration.
